With 80,000 colleagues globally, we’re driving sustainability and innovation in rail, signposting smarter transportation for smarter cities.

About the Role

The Chief Engineer - Performance ensures that train performance aligns with customer, operational, and regulatory requirements, while optimising Quality, Cost, and Delivery (QCD) objectives. You’ll be the single point of accountability for end-to-end train-level performance, acting as the principal technical interface with customers. Your responsibility spans the entire project lifecycle—from definition to revenue service—ensuring seamless integration, validation, and sustained operability.

Your Responsibilities

You’ll take the lead in:

  • Technical Interfacing: Acting as the primary technical liaison for the customer on train- and system-level performance matters.
  • System & Integration Leadership: Overseing train-level system development, integration, and validation, including:
    • Aligning architectural, functional behaviour, and performance targets.
    • Ensuring alignment between customer/operator/regulatory requirements and operational needs.
  • Requisite Management: Leading the collection, analysis, and prioritisation of stakeholder requirements to ensure they are coherent, achievable, and measurable.
  • Requirement Ownership: Maintaining a robust, compliant set of train-level requirements and specifications in line with Alstom standards.
  • Functional Analysis & Decomposition: Collaborating with subsystem engineers, suppliers, and central functions to break down performance demands at both system and subsystem levels.
  • Performance Targets: Driving technical alignment across systems to meet agreed performance targets throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Verification & Validation: Leading system-level tests to certify compliance with train performance requirements.
  • Operational Resolution: During revenue service, resolving complex performance and reliability issues, including:
    • Coordinating investigations, corrective actions, and validation to close gaps in line with project strategies.
  • Cybersecurity & Compliance: Embedding, maintaining, and demonstrating cybersecurity requirements for train systems.
  • Knowledge Retention: Feeding operational insights and lessons learned into future project standards and performance strategies.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
