Chief Engineer
Chief Systems Engineer – Aerospace Avionics
A leading aerospace avionics business based in Fareham is seeking a Chief Systems Engineer to provide technical leadership and act as the organisation’s Technical Leader and Certification Authority representative.
This is a senior engineering leadership role within a highly regulated civil aerospace environment, responsible for ensuring the airworthiness, compliance, and certification of safety-critical avionics equipment supplied to global aircraft programmes.
The business operates within a regulated civil aviation framework, working directly with certification authorities such as the UK CAA, EASA, and FAA, delivering safety-critical avionics equipment that must meet the highest levels of regulatory compliance and technical excellence.
Role Overview
- Position: Chief Systems Engineer (Chief Engineer)
- Type: Permanent
- Hours: Monday to Thursday (8:00am – 4:30pm), Friday (8:00am – 1:00pm)
- Location: Fareham, UK
- Salary: Very Competitive + 15% Bonus
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership across departments.
- Act as Company Design Signatory, signing off on product certification and airworthiness.
- Serve as the primary point of contact with the UK CAA certification manager.
- Ensure engineering processes comply with relevant civil aviation regulations.
- Review and approve certification artefacts, DDPs (Design Data Packages), and compliance documentation.
- Oversee system lifecycle planning in accordance with:
- Civil aircraft & systems development guidance.
- Safety-critical software standards.
- Airborne electronic hardware.
- System safety assessment methods.
- Ensure compliance with UK CAA regulations.
- Oversee DO-160G (environmental and EMC qualification testing).
- Maintain robust configuration and change control processes.
- Represent engineering in discussions with customers, suppliers, and regulators.

Essential Experience, Skills & Qualifications
- Preferred: Previous experience in avionics systems certification.
- Preferred: Prior product certification & airworthiness signatory responsibility.
- First-hand knowledge of configuration and change control systems.
- Strong understanding of software, hardware, and mechanical integration in systems.
- Experience in signing off design certifications and approving compliance data.
- Preferred: Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
- Ability to work autonomously while understanding commercial implications.
