Chief External Examiner - Overseas Registration Examination (ORE)

Employed status: Worker

Location: Homebased (plus travel to exam where appropriate)

Salary: £176.50 per half day plus expenses

The General Dental Council (GDC) is the UK-wide statutory regulator of the dental profession. We protect patients by ensuring all dentists and dental care professionals are qualified, competent, and registered with us.

Chief External examiners assist in the work of the ORE Advisory Group, by contributing specialist dental examination knowledge and expertise, in conjunction with that of other Advisory Group Members.

Responsibilities will include:

Overseeing the effective running of the ORE within GDC guidelines, reporting and making recommendations to the Exams Team and the ORE Advisory Group. Chief External Examiners will have responsibility over the whole ORE, however each will lead on one part of the exam.

Reporting to the Advisory Group any aspect of the execution of the examination(s) as appropriate, including standard setting, internal examiners conduct, candidates and pass marks. Ensuring that delegation of responsibility of chief external examiner (CEE) duties (if necessary) to an external examiner is conducted appropriately. Ensuring that the examination is free from bias. Ensuring that the external examiners fulfil their duties appropriately.

This role is home based with frequent travel and overnight stays will often be required during examinations at education and training institutions across the UK. About you

You must have:

Current registration with the GDC as a dentist and a demonstratable commitment to lifelong learning. Knowledge of UK higher education systems and familiarity with dental education requirements, including undergraduate BDS/BChD assessment requirements. Proven expertise in dental undergraduate education and assessment. Experience of appraising staff.

Due to the nature of the role being a worker agreement to provide services on an ad-hoc basis without any mutuality of obligations on either side. Although the GDC would normally expect External Examiners to be prepared to undertake approx. 6 days per year and, at least 1 day workshop every 18 months. This role will have a tenure of 3 years with the potential for a further 2-year extension.
