Chief Finance Officer – East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust

Key Responsibilities

The Chief Finance Officer (CFO) will be a statutory Executive Director with direct reporting to the Chief Executive, collaborating with the Executive Team and Board to:

  • Inform and refine strategic direction
  • Drive financial performance and operational excellence
  • Safeguard financial health while allocating resources to services, staff, and infrastructure

Beyond traditional finance, the CFO must shape the Trust’s culture, strategy, and system-level relationships—impacting not just local care but the broader Hertfordshire and West Essex health ecosystem.

Core Duties

  • Strategic leadership across Finance, Planning, Performance, and Business Intelligence
  • Provide evidence-informed, high-quality analysis and transparent accountability to ensure strategic decision-making is data-driven
  • Serve as the CEO’s trusted advisor on financial sustainability, investment, commercial strategy, productivity, and executive performance
  • Strengthen executive leadership, Perform in line with the Trust’s values, and model a high-performing organisational culture.

Organisational Overview

Founded in 2000 through the merger of two NHS trusts, the organisation now delivers care across four sites and operates highly rated acute, renal, urologic, and plastic surgical services:

  • Lister Hospital (Stevenage): Inpatient and complex care hub
  • Mount Vernon Cancer Centre (Northwood): Regional cancer services
  • Queen Elizabeth II Hospital: Non-acute and community care
  • Hertford County Hospital: Further specialist support
