Chief of Staff

The Chief of Staff is a key advisor to the Chief Constable and Force Executive members, principally but not exclusively, on key relationships with our oversight bodies, with political stakeholders, national policing and beyond. The postholder has responsibility for positioning WMP’s priorities, commitments and requests with stakeholders, supported by effective briefing materials.

The postholder is the senior leader of the Force Executive Support Team and has responsibility across this command to ensure effective and efficient working practices are adopted. Working alongside the Staff Officer to the Chief Constable, and Chief of Staff to the Deputy Chief Constable, they will contribute to effective decision making around the Chief Constables strategic priorities and commitments, ensuring decisions are informed, timely and reflect operational and organisational priorities.

They will support in identifying and flagging emerging strategic risks, issues or pressures that may impact the Chief Constables ability to deliver on their responsibilities.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

West Midlands Police is a Disability Confident Leader - the highest level an organisation can achieve under the scheme run by the Department of Work and Pensions. As part of our commitment we operate a ‘Disability Confident Interview Scheme’ - all candidates who declare a disability and meet the essential criteria for the role will be offered an interview.

It is important to note that there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all disabled people who meet the essential criteria for the job. For example, in certain recruitment situations such as high-volume, seasonal and high-peak times, the employer may wish to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people. In these circumstances, the employer could select the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job, as they would do for non-disabled applicants.
