About the Role
The UK’s Fleet of Scientific Research Vessels provides essential ocean-going platforms for UK-wide oceanographic research. The Research Infrastructure Function, a core part of NOC, operates in collaboration with UKRI and the University of Southampton.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will report directly to the Chief Officer as Head of the Deck Department aboard either:
- Royal Research Ship (RRS) Discovery or
- RRS James Cook
Your primary duties include:
- Coordination and oversight of scientific operations on deck, including:
- Operation of scientific winches
- Deployment and recovery of scientific equipment and moorings
- Maintenance of associated systems
- Supporting broader Deck Department activities as required.
You will work closely with the Captain and Chief Officer to ensure seamless execution of marine research missions.

Who We’re Looking For
Essential Criteria
Applicants must hold the following qualifications and certifications (proof must be provided with application):
- AB (SG1A) Certificate (issued by UK MCA)
- Navigation Watch Rating Certificate (compliant with STCW 2010)
- MCA Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG1) or an equivalently recognised certificate (no restrictions)
- Four elements of basic training (per STCW 95):
- First Aid
- Fire Fighting
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities
- Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats
- Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
- Valid UK passport or proof of unrestricted work eligibility in the UK
- Valid Discharge Book
Global Mobility Requirement
Applicants must possess or be eligible for:
- US C1/D Visa enabling unrestricted worldwide travel.
Key Experience
You must demonstrate senior-level experience in a scientific research vessel or ** comparable marine sector** (OSV, PSV, ERRV, DSV etc.), with:
- Hands-on knowledge of overboard handling and lifting systems, including:
- Installation, operation, and maintenance
- Documentary evidence of your relevant experience
Additional consideration will be given to applicants with experience in offshore sectors (e.g. renewables, surveying, seismics).
Working Conditions
Seagoing duty rotations typically involve:
- At least two full scientific expeditions or two months per tour (subject to operational schedule)
- Leave accrual: 27 days per calendar month (for each month onboard)
Unused leave can be monetarily compensated under NOC policy.
