Chief Registrar – Leadership & Quality Improvement Opportunity The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital


About the Role

An exciting fixed-term opportunity has arisen for a senior doctor in training (above ST4 or equivalent) with a passion for leadership, management, and quality improvement to join The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a Chief Registrar.

This 40–50% protected role enables senior trainees to develop leadership skills in a supported environment through the Royal College of Physicians’ (RCP) bespoke development programme. The focus areas include addressing local challenges such as:

  • Service improvement
  • Workforce engagement and morale
  • Education and training
  • Sustainability

The role offers autonomy and flexibility to drive relevant initiatives while being mentored by senior clinical leaders.


Who Can Apply?

This role is open to:

  • National Training Number (NTN) holders at ST4 level or above
  • Locally employed doctors (LED) with equivalent experience
  • Full-time or part-time workers
  • Doctors with full General Medical Council (GMC) registration

⚠️ Important: For NTN holders, the role can be undertaken in or out of training (on-programme or out-of-programme). Permission must be granted by your educational supervisor and training programme director (TPD) prior to applying.

Key Requirements

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be eager to learn leadership and gain senior leadership experience

The post begins 05 August 2026 and is fixed-term (minimum 12 months).


Development & Mentorship

The role includes:

  • Curriculum-backed modules from the RCP’s leadership programme, covering:

    • Leading change
    • Team culture and development
    • Quality improvement methods
    • Self-awareness and interpersonal skills
  • 1-to-1 mentorship with a senior clinical leader, providing unique insight into:

    • NHS leadership frameworks
    • Operational structures
    • Key stakeholders
