Child Protection Adviser – Buckinghamshire Council

We’re looking for an experienced and passionate Child Protection Adviser to play a vital role in safeguarding children and young people across Aylesbury, High Wycombe, and Amersham.

This influential position within Children’s Social Care offers the opportunity to:

About Us

About The Role

As a Child Protection Adviser, your key responsibilities include:

Core Responsibilities

  • Chairing Conferences:

    • Lead Initial and Review Child Protection Conferences to ensure they are timely, inclusive, and focused on safety.
    • Apply a strengths-based, relationship-focused approach aligned with Strengthening Families to:
      • Support professionals and families in understanding risk.
      • Address harm.
      • Agree effective, child-centred plans.
  • Professional Challenging & Advice:

    • Act as a critical friend to social work teams and partner agencies.
    • Provide expert advice, professional challenge, and guidance on:
      • Thresholds.
      • Planning.
      • Statutory requirements.
  • Quality Assurance:

    • Monitor and review Child Protection Plans.
    • Contribute to the audit framework.
    • Share learning and best practice to improve standards across the service.

  • Collaboration & Partnerships:

    • Work closely with multi-agency partners.
    • Contribute to dispute resolution where needed.
    • Take part in a weekly duty rota.
    • Support learning and development through:
      • Training.
      • Performance reporting.
  • Child-Centred Practice:

    • Ensure the voice of the child is central in every discussion and decision.

About You

Essential Requirements

  • Experience & Authority:

    • Substantial post-qualification experience in statutory children’s services, preferably at an advanced practitioner or management level.
    • Demonstrated ability to:
      • Chair complex meetings.
      • Engage effectively with families and professionals.
      • Produce clear, well-evidenced reports.
  • Legal & Safeguarding Knowledge:

    • Strong working knowledge of:
      • Child protection legislation.
      • Statutory guidance.
      • Safeguarding procedures.
    • Comfortable exercising professional authority to challenge constructively.
  • Skills & Competencies:

    • Risk assessment expertise.
    • Ability to develop robust, child-focused protection plans.
    • Collaborative working with partners to promote safety and positive change.
  • Qualifications & Registration:

    • Recognised social work qualification.
    • Registered with Social Work England.
    • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Travel & Mobility:

    • Ability to travel across the county, with access to a vehicle.
