We’re Hiring: Children and Young People’s Counsellor
Organisation: Key Unlocking Futures (part of Progress Housing Group)
Key Details
- Salary: £28,476 – £29,470 per annum (pro rata)
- Location: Agile working with travel across Lancashire
- Hours: 36.5 hours per week
- Contract: 6 months – Temporary/Fixed-Term
- Key Requirement: Enhanced DBS check required

The Role: Children and Young People’s Counsellor
You’ll deliver short-term therapeutic support to children and young people experiencing mental health, emotional, or wellbeing challenges. Your work will focus on:
- Building trusted relationships to facilitate trust and progress.
- Managing a caseload while ensuring high-quality, individualised care.
- Collaborating with families, referral partners, and other professionals for joined-up support.

Key Responsibilities
- Therapeutic Intervention:
- Assess needs and deliver short-term therapeutic interventions.
- Support emotional wellbeing and resilience for young people.
- Case Management:
- Manage a client caseload independently.
- Maintain confidential case records and update documentation.
- Partnerships & Safeguarding:
- Work closely with referral partners, agencies, and families.
- Use Outcomes Stars and contribute to Early Help processes as required.
- Strict adherence to safeguarding procedures at all times.
Who We’re Looking For
Essential
- A degree or diploma in Counselling Studies, or equivalent expertise (e.g., CBT, Psychotherapy, Play Therapy).
- Proven experience supporting children and young people with diverse and complex needs.
- Experience managing a varied caseload under pressure.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Child development
- BACP codes of practice
- Current challenges faced by young people today.
- Client-focused skills: Ability to build emotionally trusted relationships.
- Organisational strengths: Self-reliance, adaptability, and independence.
- Mobility: Access to a car for work travel.
Desirable (but not essential)
- Working towards BACP accreditation (or equivalent).
- Experience in a multi-agency setting.
- Safeguarding knowledge, including:
- EHA (Early Help Assessment) processes
- TAF (Team Around the Family) procedures.
- Familiarity with electronic case management systems.
