Children and Young Peoples Domestic Violence Advisor
£41,133 - £43,680 per annum
Directorate: Children & Young People
Location: Newham | Hybrid Working
Contract type: 18 months secondment
This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check and Social Work England registration
About the Role
We are looking for experienced and committed Independent Domestic Violence advocates, or those with a Social Work Qualification, to offer a direct response to tackle domestic abuse (DA) experienced by children and young people across and early intervention approach, offering intensive support for children and young people under the age of 25.
As a Children and Young People’s Domestic Violence Advisor (CIDVA) you will:
- Provide support to children and young people who have been victims of abuse, assaulted and/or abused by a peer, parent or close family member, or witnessed abuse.
- Deliver an intensive, 12-week intervention through a trauma-responsive, child-centred approach lens, working with children and young people in the spaces and places where ‘they-are-at’.
- Ensure all children and young people have a voice across understanding their experience, what has happened to them and will be instrumental in directing the work programme across a support offer that is relevant to them.
- Take the lead in managing positive interventions that prevent deterioration in health and wellbeing whilst safeguarding children and young people at risk of abuse or neglect.
- Contribute to and support the Newham Together Vision including the implementation of our Strategic Improvement Plan for Children’s Services; the Children and Young People’s plan and Domestic Abuse Delivery Model Action Plan.
- Increase feelings of safety for children and young people by delivering one-to-one interventions to children and young people, as well as make referrals to other appropriate agencies (both statutory or non-statutory), provide coaching, child-focused workshops and deliver training across healthy relationships.
- Provide support to other practitioners who are working directly with high-risk, children and young people (including in partner agencies and VCFS) to shape and deliver a relational and trauma-informed programme of structured support that will help children and young people.
- Be an active member of the team, to work collaboratively with colleagues and external stakeholders to achieve our service plans and priorities around Domestic Abuse.
- Champion our priorities and obsessions to improve the lives of children, families and care leavers, contribute to workforce development and advocate for young people with agencies.
- Work therapeutically with children and young people using creative engagement techniques.

The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the Theatre Royal Stratford East offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.
