About the Role
Create opportunities. Build futures.
Join our compassionate team at Hampshire County Council’s Hockley House Residential Home and make a real difference in the lives of children aged 12+ who require high levels of emotional, behavioural and mental health support. Our children thrive in a trauma-informed therapeutic environment, where a multi-agency team of Care, Health, and Education professionals work together to design personalised intervention plans.
Our goal? To heal, stabilise, and empower young people, helping them reconnect with families, progress educationally, or transition confidently towards independence.
As a Support Worker, your role will be pivotal in nurturing growth, ensuring safety, and fostering resilience in children who may have experienced trauma or complex family situations.
Key Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Build trust-based, trauma-informed relationships with children, families, and professionals to advocate for their wellbeing and progress.
- Provide holistic care, addressing both physical and emotional needs in a safe, supportive setting.
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (Health, Education, Social Workers) to draw up and implement trainable care plans.
- Assist children with personal development, life skills, and educational attainment, while delivering reward-based, positive behaviour support.
- Maintain safe environments, conduct risk assessments, implement safeguarding protocols, and ensure compliance with legislation and organisational policies.
- Complete detailed record-keeping, document reviews, and write progress reports for families, education teams, and professionals.
- Encourage independent living goals where appropriate, focusing on freedom from external forces that may perpetuate distress.
- Participate in ongoing training, professional development, and continuous assessment of person-centred approaches.
- Promote positive engagement with kinship carers and wider families wherever relevant.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
