Band 6 Occupational Therapist

East of England Community Health Care – Children’s Occupational Therapy Service

About the Organisation

The East of England Community Health Care provides an integrated Occupational Therapy (OT) service, merging health and social care roles with over a decade of experience.

You will join a dynamic team of skilled occupational therapists and assistants, collaborating closely with physiotherapists, the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), local authorities, and schools.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist to support children and young people (0-19 years) with a wide range of disabilities and developmental delays.

This versatile post will involve working across multiple settings:

  • Named special school
  • Community caseload (varying locations)
  • The Oak Tree Centre (clinic base, Huntingdon)
  • Families’ homes
  • Mainstream schools & pre-school settings

You will:

  • Lead your own caseload, ensuring high-quality OT interventions for children and families.
  • Supervise junior staff/students within your team, contributing to their training and development.
  • Work collaboratively across traditional health and social care boundaries, fostering strong relationships with schools, the MDT, local authorities, and physiotherapists.
  • Hybrid working model – Based at The Oak Tree Centre, but requiring travel across Huntingdonshire county for training, CPD, and service delivery.
  • Uphold the service’s commitment to innovation and continuous professional development (CPD).

Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Deliver comprehensive occupational therapy assessments and interventions for children with complex disabilities or developmental challenges.
  • Establish and maintain interdisciplinary working relationships across health, education, and social care sectors.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff, therapy students, or assistant OTs.
  • Work flexibly to meet diverse service needs, including clinic-based, school-based, and community visits.
  • Participate in mandatory training and continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Promote holistic care that maximises children’s independence, school participation, and overall well-being.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practice in paediatric OT.

About You (Person Specification)

Experience & Qualifications

  • Registered Occupational Therapist on the UKVHC (UK Register of Healthcare Professionals).
  • A minimum of 2 years’ post-qualifying experience (though all experiences are welcome!).
  • Extensive experience in working with children or young people with diverse disabilities/developmental challenges (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Familiarity with school-based, community, and home-visit settings beneficially.
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary working, including with educational, social care, and clinical colleagues.

Essential Competencies

✔ Exceptional clinical judgement and problem-solving skills. ✔ Strong ability to build therapeutic working relationships with children, families, and professionals. ✔ Effective communication skills (written and verbal) across ages and educational sectors. ✔ Ability to supervise and mentor effectively in a senior role. ✔ Adaptability and willingness to work in mixed settings (special schools, homes, and community environments). ✔ Ongoing interest in professional development and research.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with assistive technology and family-centred practice.
  • Knowledge of the Children Act, SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) frameworks.
  • Interest in project management or contributing to strategic planning.

Location & Working Arrangement

  • Primary base: The Oak Tree Centre, Huntingdon (stepped offices supported for hybrid working where appropriate).
  • Regular travel across Huntingdonshire will be required.
  • Flexible on-site and remote/hybrid attendance for CPD and team meetings.
