Salary: Equivalent to NHS Band 5, depending on experience

Hours: 40 Hours a week

Accountable to: Senior Clinical Psychologist

Professionally supervised by: Senior Clinical Psychologist

Base: Hybrid, Once a week in Central London


Job Summary

The post-holder will deliver brief, evidence-based, low-intensity psychological interventions to children and young people, and their parents and carers, experiencing mild-to-moderate common mental health difficulties, primarily anxiety, emotion dysregulation, low mood, and behavioural difficulties. Working to defined protocols and within a clearly bounded scope of practice, the post holder will support a caseload under regular clinical and case-management supervision, contributing to timely access and early intervention within a stepped-care model.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Deliver low-intensity, CBT and DBT informed interventions including guided self-help, messaging support, parent focused support and structured self-help for young people (age 11-18), on an individual and group basis.
  • Carry out brief, structured assessments to identify presenting difficulties, suitability for low-intensity work, and risk.
  • Support and empower children, young people, their parents/ carers and families to make informed choices about the interventions being offered.
  • Use routine outcome and session-by-session measures (for example RCADS, SDQ, goal-based outcomes) to monitor progress and inform shared decision-making.
  • Undertake and record accurate assessments and formulation of risk, respond to, and escalate safeguarding concerns and clinical risk concerns promptly, in line with local policy and supervisory structures.
  • Through case management, supervision and any other relevant local pathway make decisions on suitability of new referrals, adhering to the service's referral protocols, referring clients with more high expressions of need on to the relevant service or back to the referral agent as necessary, or stepping up the person's treatment to high intensity psychological therapy.
  • Work closely with other members of the team ensuring appropriate step-up and step-down arrangements are in place to maintain a stepped care approach.
  • Practice, evidence and demonstrate an ability to manage one’s own caseload in conjunction with the requirements of the team.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary and multi-agency meetings relating to referrals or clients in treatment, where appropriate.
  • Complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service. To keep up to date, coherent and accurate records of all clinical activity in line with service protocols and use these records and clinical outcome data to inform clinical decision making.
  • Adhere to all regulations, processes, and procedures within the services to which the postholder is working in partnership with including (but not limited to) HR policies, training requirements, referral protocols, and emergency procedures.
  • Contribute to the development of individual or group clinical content materials or training materials as necessary and appropriate.

Supervision and Professional Development

  • Prepare and present clinical information for all clients on their caseload to clinical/case management supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the clinical governance obligations of the worker, supervisor and service are delivered.
  • Respond to and implement supervision suggestions by supervisors in clinical practice.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and GDPR-compliant clinical records.

Communication and Partnership

  • Work collaboratively with parents and carers, schools, GPs, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication on complex issues to a wide range of audiences, including senior management level and children, young people and families, both verbal and written communication.

Service and Quality

  • To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other team members.
  • Contribute to audit, service evaluation, and data collection supporting access and outcome targets.
  • Support a culture of co-production with children, young people, and families.

Clinical and Practice Governance

  • Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.
  • It is a condition of your employment that you are currently registered with either the BPS or the BABCP and it is your responsibility to maintain your professional registration.
  • Undertake mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by Speek and partnership services.
  • Maintain awareness of and execute responsibilities with regard to the safeguarding children and adults’ agenda, confidentiality, service and professional training requirements, data protection and sharing, information governance, risk management and reporting and all relevant legislation and local policy.
  • Ensure the maintenance of standards of own professional practice according to both the postholder’s and the employers.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: Successful completion of Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner Training Course (Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma) AND registered with either the BPS or the BABCP.
  • Desirable: Additional training relevant to children and young people’s mental health.

Experience

  • Essential: Experience of working with children and young people in a health, education, social care, or voluntary setting, and their families. Experience of working with children and young people who have social, emotional and/or behavioural difficulties. Experience of working with anxiety disorders and affective (mood) disorders. Experience of the delivery of specific therapeutic interventions to children, young people or their families (e.g. CBT, third-wave interventions). Experience of working and liaising with a wide variety of agencies and stakeholders, including schools and mental health services. Experience of collecting and recording patient reported outcome measures to monitor progress for children’s emotional wellbeing (A/I). Experience of carrying out psychological assessment including assessment of risk (A/I).
  • Desirable: Experience of working with challenging behaviours. Experiences of working with families/carers. Experience or knowledge of working digitally. Experience of working with children and their families in a health care setting. Experience of navigating complex social systems and environments, who may have conflicting priorities or agendas. Experience of working with other vulnerable groups.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Essential: Understanding of common children and young people’s mental health presentations and the principles of low-intensity, evidence-based intervention. Ability to recognise and make an assessment of risk, escalating risk and safeguarding concerns, recording and communicating concerns appropriately. Ability to take appropriate action to mitigate or manage risk. Knowledge of safeguarding issues. Strong interpersonal and engagement skills with young people and families. Ability to carry out 1:1 therapeutic mental health assessments and interventions with children and families. Ability to conduct group interventions to young people and their parents. Well-developed record keeping skills. Proficiency in IT skills including email, databases and electronic record systems is required. Demonstrates high standards in written communication, able to write clear clinical notes, reports and letters to referrers. A sound understanding of the principles of CBT and third wave approaches (including DBT) application across a broad range of mental health presentations. For home-based positions you will be required to have a minimum of 5mb download internet speed at the home address.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with stepped-care models and routine outcome monitoring. Desire to work in an innovative and fast-paced environment.
