Chiller Engineer (mobile)

Location: London & South East

To ensure the efficient operation, maintenance, and reliability of all chilled water and HVAC cooling systems across the site. The Chiller Engineer will carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, fault finding, and repair works on a range of commercial cooling equipment, including chillers, pumps, associated plant, and control systems.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate strong technical knowledge of chiller systems, refrigeration principles, BMS controls, pumps, cooling towers, and associated mechanical and electrical plant, with the ability to diagnose faults and interpret system performance data to maintain optimum operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on chillers, chilled water systems, cooling towers, pumps, AHUs, FCUs, and associated HVAC equipment in accordance with maintenance schedules and asset registers.
  • Diagnose and repair faults on a variety of chiller systems, including air-cooled and water-cooled units from major manufacturers.
  • Complete reactive maintenance and emergency breakdown repairs, ensuring minimal disruption to site operations.
  • Monitor plant performance and identify opportunities for improving system reliability, energy efficiency, and operational performance.
  • Conduct refrigerant leak detection, testing, and repairs in accordance with current F-Gas regulations and industry best practice.
  • Operate and utilise the Building Management System (BMS) to monitor environmental conditions, identify faults, and optimise cooling plant performance.
  • Ensure that all plant faults and defects are promptly rectified to maintain critical cooling infrastructure and environmental conditions.
  • Manage and supervise specialist subcontractors, ensuring works are completed safely, compliantly, and to the required standard.
  • Administer permits to work and ensure compliance with BGIS Quality, Health & Safety procedures and client requirements.
  • Prepare and utilise suitable Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for all maintenance and repair activities.
  • Ensure suitable spare parts and refrigerant stock are available to support maintenance and repair activities.
  • Provide parts quotations, recommendations, and estimated timescales for remedial works when required.
  • Ensure all service reports, maintenance records, and reactive work documentation are completed accurately and submitted promptly.
  • Maintain all plant rooms, chiller compounds, and associated work areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory regulations, including F-Gas legislation, refrigeration safety standards, and BGIS operating procedures.
  • Support energy management initiatives by monitoring system efficiency and recommending improvements where appropriate.
  • Ensure assigned tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and within agreed KPI and SLA requirements.
  • Update and maintain the Computer-Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) system (e.g., Maximo) with accurate records of completed PPMs, reactive works, and asset information.
  • Promote a strong health and safety culture, completing dynamic risk assessments, near miss reporting, and ensuring compliance with Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with BGIS colleagues, subcontractors, and client representatives.
  • Present a professional image of BGIS at all times through conduct, communication, PPE, and adherence to company standards.
  • Undertake any additional duties as directed by the Site Management Team.

Essential

  • Proven experience maintaining and repairing commercial or critical-environment chiller systems.
  • Recognised Refrigeration & Air Conditioning qualification (City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2/3, or equivalent).
  • Current F-Gas Category 1 Certification.
  • Strong fault-finding experience on chilled water and refrigeration systems.
  • Knowledge of pumps, cooling towers, pressurisation units, valves, controls, and BMS systems.
  • Good understanding of mechanical and electrical building services.
  • Experience working within commercial, critical, data centre, healthcare, or similar environments.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

  • IPAF qualification.
  • PASMA qualification.
  • Experience with major chiller manufacturers such as Trane, Carrier, Daikin, York, McQuay, Mitsubishi, or Climaveneta.
  • Experience using CAFM systems such as Maximo.
  • Electrical qualifications or HVAC controls experience.
