BACKGROUND
Discarded Nut Youth Theatre (DNYT) is Discarded Nut’s resident youth theatre company based at The Nutshell in Winchester and is one of three brands within arts charity Discarded Nut CIO.
DNYT has a strong reputation for producing high-quality youth theatre productions, and is unparalleled for nurturing every individual that it engages with, working to shape pathways that help them achieve their greatest potential. We strive to support and encourage young people at every stage of their development as both performers and individuals - challenging and changing people’s perceptions of what young people can do.
SUMMARY OF THE ROLE
We are looking for an inspiring and highly motivated Choreographer to join our creative team from September 2026. The Choreographer will be responsible for planning and delivering the movement and dance elements for the below groups. You will work closely as a team with the Director, Musical Director, and workshop assistants to create exciting, cohesive musical theatre work, building our members' confidence, technique, and creative skills.

- Hourly Rate: £15 per hour (freelance)
- Location: The Nutshell, Winchester
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
To lead the movement, dance, and physical training for DNYT members across the specified age groups, and to choreograph the company’s performances. This post would be an ideal opportunity for a recent graduate or an early-career professional in dance facilitation who is looking to extend their experience or expand their existing skills.

- DNYT Peanuts MT (Academic Years R-3) - Mon & Sat
- DNYT Coconuts MT (Academic Years 4-8) - Mon & Sat
These groups are all about having fun whilst giving young people the opportunity to be themselves; expressing their creativity in a safe, friendly, and supportive environment. As well as taking their first steps on stage, and building foundations in singing, dancing and acting, our younger companies also learn important skills in communication, commitment and working together as they make new friends and put on a fantastic show at the end of the year.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Creative Delivery: Plan and deliver high-quality, engaging creative dance sessions for participants aged 4 to 18+, taking professional ownership of all movement & choreographic elements.
- Production Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the Director, Musical Director, and workshop assistants to devise and refine movement for showcase and year-end performances.
- Rehearsal Management: In a team setting, map out a clear termly choreography and rehearsal schedule, ensuring key creative milestones are met.
- Session Administration: Oversee routine session logistics, including conducting physical warm-ups and maintaining accurate attendance registers. (NB: duties, such as parent liaison and data management, will be assigned to a designated lead team member, to be confirmed post-interview period).
- Inclusive Mentorship: Act as an encouraging and supportive creative role model, creating a positive workspace that builds confidence and values kindness.
- Production Support: Attend and actively contribute to scheduled creative production meetings, technical rehearsals, and dress rehearsals as agreed.
- Compliance: Maintain a current Enhanced DBS check (compulsory) and ensure all sessions strictly align with Discarded Nut’s health, safety, and safeguarding procedures.
- Brand Advocacy: Becoming an ambassador for Discarded Nut and The Nutshell, actively promoting our work to friends and contacts whilst helping to maintain the high standard of our company’s profile and work.
- Auditions and Casting: Lead the movement and dance components of the audition process for new intake periods and production casting, collaborating with the creative team to evaluate and place participants.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
- Weekly Saturday morning and Monday early evening availability
- An aspirational person with a big passion for the arts
- Experience of working with and leading drama/singing workshops with young people (aged 4+)
- The ability to work as part of a team as well as under your own initiative
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent level of organisational skills and time management
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt to circumstances and opportunities

Desirable
- Good knowledge and experience in other art forms
- Experience of the performing arts, either on-stage or behind-the-scenes
- Knowledge of Health and Safety in working with children and young people
- DBS update service number
- Qualified first aider / paediatric first aider
- Full, clean driving licence
