Job Title & Details

Position: Band 6 COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Specialist Nurse

  • Salary: £39,959 – £48,117 per annum
  • Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)
  • Contract: 2 temporary 12-month terms
  • Location: Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, UK

About the Role

Are you a healthcare professional eager to gain experience in COPD management while contributing to a dynamic care team? If so, this is a fantastic opportunity to help deliver high-quality, patient-centred care and make a real difference.

The COPD Specialist Team at Portsmouth Hospital is staffed by a Band 7 Team Lead CNS and Band 6 CNS. Currently, they manage approximately 1,200 annual admissions for acute COPD exacerbations.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will include:

  • Reviewing acute COPD admissions within 24 hours of admission.
  • Delivering a tailored COPD care bundle to optimise patient outcomes and reduce readmissions.
  • Working alongside the Respiratory Virtual Team to:
    • Identify patients for early supported discharge.
    • Coordinate daily virtual welfare checks for patients on the virtual ward.
    • Support direct admissions to respiratory wards.
  • Providing care across multiple settings:
    • Emergency Department
    • Acute Medical Unit
    • Medical Wards
    • Respiratory Wards
    • Respiratory High Care
    • Respiratory Outpatients
  • Building collaborative relationships with specialist respiratory services (including asthma, bronchiectasis, TB, NIV, and sleep medicine).

Requirements

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Current registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • A BSc degree in a relevant healthcare field.
  • At least 2 years of post-registration experience, including minimum 4 years total clinical experience within a respiratory medicine environment.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree (preferably in respiratory medicine or healthcare leadership).
  • Post-registration qualifications in respiratory medicine (if applicable).

Essential Skills & Knowledge

  • Clinical competence in respiratory medicine.
  • Strong clinical decision-making skills.
  • Advanced communication and team-working abilities.
  • Excellent organisational skills with an emphasis on forward planning.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to varied patient needs.
  • Strong critical appraisal and problem-solving approach.
  • Excellent customer service—focused on patient care.
  • IT proficiency for digital clinical documentation.
