Civil and Structural Superintendent – North

The position of Civil and Structural Superintendent – North has become available to join a major Energy project based in Teesside. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a career-enhancing project and become a valued member of an expanding team.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Discipline Construction Lead (Piling & Civils), the Superintendent Civils and Structural will lead the safe, high-quality, and timely execution of all Civil and Structural construction activities in the North. Ensure progressive project completion and strict adherence to project standards and procedures. This role also supports:

  • Head of Construction
  • Construction Managers
  • Advanced Work Packaging Lead
  • Work Pack Engineers
  • Any other relevant members of the construction team

Location: Full-time, site based in Teesside.


Core Responsibilities

Field Execution & Safety

  • Facilities Contractor Management:

    • Oversee the 管理 Front Line Supervisors of contracted facilities teams, ensuring daily and 4-weekly work plans are achieved.
    • Select and appoint Front Line Supervisors in compliance with SHE-H-703.
  • Meetings & Briefings:

    • Lead daily coordination meetings and deliver concise start-of-shift briefings to contractors and teams.
  • Readiness & Advanced Work Packaging (AWP):

    • Validate work fronts, permits, and approved Installation Work Packages (IWPs) before activities commence.
    • Ensure on-site use of IWPs by contractors’ Front-Line Supervisors.

  • Permit-to-Work (PTW):

    • Act as the Area Authority (AA) under PTW procedures.
    • Assist in drafting permits with Facilities Contractors.
  • Safety Leadership (SHE):

    • Enforce safe systems of work, alignment with construction phase plans, and RAMS reviews per SHE-T-383.
  • Progress & Reporting:

    • Monitor daily output against project schedules.
    • Report blockers, deviations, or risks to the Civil/Structural Construction Lead.

Quality & Technical

  • Quality Control:

    • Ensure all Civil & Structural work strictly follows design drawings, specifications, and Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
  • Design Interface:

    • Interpret design documentation and specs and facilitate the onsite technical queries (TQ’s) process.
  • Work Package Support:

    • Collaborate with Work Package Engineers in development and validation of IWPs.
  • Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain accuracy and timeliness for Costain’s daily reports (CPM-T-1005) and Installation Test Records (ITRs).

Temporary Works & Regulatory Compliance

  • Temporary Works Supervisor:

    • Function as the primary point of contact for Civil & Structural temporary works (e.g., formwork, shoring, scaffolding).
  • Regulatory Compliance:

    • Ensure temporary works execution and sign-off align with BS 5975.
    • Liaise with the Temporary Works Coordinator.
  • CDM 2015 Compliance:

    • Verify contractors’ methods meet CDM 2015 obligations for Civil & Structural execution.

Completions & Handover

  • Inspection Test Record (ITR) Progress:

    • Lead timely execution, documentation, and sign-off of ITRs/pre-commissioning checks for Civil & Structural tasks.
  • Punch List & Closure:

    • Identify initial punch list items and manage contractor rectifications for early closeout.
  • Handover Readiness:

    • Ensure critical Civil & Structural works are documented, verified, and physically ready for Mechanical &Process (M&P) or Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) handover teams.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Five years or more of relevant experience in coordinating Civil & Structural construction on a large-scale, capital-heavy project.
  • Brownfield project experience, with prior work on upper-tier COMAH sites.
  • Signed-off CSCS/CCNSG Health & Safety Card.
  • Proficiency with Permit-To-Work (PTW) processes.
  • Advanced reading and interpretation of Civil and Structural designs for feasibility assessments.
  • Strong ability to diagnose and resolve problems efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with multi-disciplinary engineering teams and contractors.
  • Expertise in progress reporting, handovers, and record-keeping.
  • Proven attainment of a Trade Qualification or Apprenticeship, such as:
    • C+Guilds NVQ Level 3 or above
    • HNC/Diploma in Civil/Structural Engineering subject area (or equivalent).
