Civil Design Engineer
Leading Opportunity in Water & Wastewater Infrastructure
FJA are recruiting for a Civil Design Engineer based in Brighton, working with a major player in the Water and Wastewater Infrastructure sector. This is an outstanding chance to join a well-established engineering team delivering critical capital projects that drive resilient water infrastructure and environmental protection across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deliver wastewater network solutions, including:
- Pumping systems
- Pipelines
- Associated infrastructure
- Collaborate with project teams and clients to define, evaluate, and mitigate technical, environmental, and commercial risks
- Produce hydraulic, mechanical, and civil design calculations for wastewater projects
- Contribute to P&IDs, technical specifications, and datasheets for project feasibility and approval
- Conduct engineering appraisals, feasibility studies, site inspections, and condition assessments
- Ensure designs meet:
- Client requirements
- Environmental standards
- Statutory regulations (e.g., CDM Regulations, Health & Safety legislation)
- Maintain and update technical documentation, including reports, drawings, and specifications
- Identify and escalate project risks affecting programme, cost, quality, or compliance
- Support Health & Safety compliance, promoting safe designs and best practice
- Drive innovation, continuous improvement, and professional development
- Foster strong external relationships with clients, stakeholders, and colleagues

Ideal Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of HND/Bachelor’s in Mechanical or Civil Engineering, or equivalent industry experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in the water/wastewater sector (proven by portfolio, case studies, or references)
- Specialist experience in:
- Wastewater infrastructure
- Pumping systems
- Pipeline network solutions
- Proven hydraulic design skills and understanding of wastewater treatment processes
- Knowledge of environmental permitting, legislation, and risk assessment
- Fluency in Microsoft Office and industry-standard engineering software
Core Competencies
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Attention to detail in risk assessment, documentation, and compliance
- Team collaboration with cross-disciplinary project groups
- Clear communication (written and verbal) for stakeholder updates
- Commitment to professional development and best practice
Advantages
- Professional registration (membership of ICE/IMechE) or progressing to CEng/IEng
