Civil Design Engineer - Operations T&E
Civil Design Engineer Scotland – (Hybrid, Office, Site) Permanent Competitive Salary + Car/Car Allowance + Flexible Benefits
Summary
Are you an experienced Civil Engineer with a passion for civil engineering and the energy sector?
Freedom Professional Services are seeking an individual with strong technical expertise across a broad range of civil engineering disciplines to join their growing electricity transmission and distribution design team. With your technical skills, you will lead the civil design of electricity substations across the UK from concept to completion, collaborating closely with internal teams (electrical design, structural, surveys, wayleaves, cables, environmental) as well as clients and stakeholders to ensure all requirements are met.
As a Civil Engineer, you will contribute to design frameworks for Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), tackle high-profile projects for iconic clients, and ensure high-standard execution throughout every project phase—from planning, cost estimation and construction to quality control.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead design deliverables:
- Produce and review engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and reports for:
- Masonry buildings
- Steel portal frames
- Transformer bunds
- Drainage systems
- Roads
- (Scope: construction contracts ranging from £100K to £20M)

Project collaboration:
- Work with clients and internal teams to ensure effective project delivery, track progress, and proactively identify programme, cost, or quality risks.
- Attend progress meetings at client offices, contractor sites.
- Facilitate design team meetings to coordinate deliverables and maintain alignment with project scope.

Technical problem-solving:
- Mitigate design risks and provide buildable solutions.
- Address site-based challenges through technical queries, TQ/RFI processes.

- Mentor junior team members, offering technical guidance and supporting professional growth.

Continuous improvement:
- Ensure your skills stay current through ongoing professional development, adapting to legislative changes and customer requirements.
Requirements:
Must have:
- Degree in Civil Engineering (or related subject).
- Working toward Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (CEng bola) status with a relevant professional body such as ICE.
- Proven experience designing masonry buildings, steel portal frames, and reinforced concrete structures.
- Ability to deliver multiple simultaneous projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong client-facing skills; proactive in managing stakeholder relationships.
- Effective technical and cross-functional communication to engage teams and clients.
Desirable (using existing gum boots!):
- Experience in the electricity distribution sector specialising in substation design and electrical infrastructure.
- Hands-on experience with:
- AutoCAD
- Revit
- Civils3D
- Full UK driving licence.
