Civil Enforcement Officer – Crawley Borough Council
About the Role
Are you looking for a fresh challenge within the council? We’re offering an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Civil Enforcement Officer, helping to deliver high-quality enforcement services across Crawley.
This crucial role supports the safe and efficient movement of traffic by:
- Promoting parking compliance (through education and enforcement) in on-street parking and council-operated car parks
- Collaborating with West Sussex County Council to ensure fair access to parking facilities
- Serving as a visible ambassador for the council, offering guidance, support, and professional engagement with the public
You’ll also work with the community protection team, local police, and other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour in Borinough-owned car parks.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct outdoor, foot-based work in all weather conditions
- Manage frequent walking and physical activity as part of daily duties
- Engage directly with members of the public, including conflict resolution and challenging scenarios
- Operate independently or as part of a team, maintaining high standards of professionalism

Ideal Candidate Requirements
- Strong communication skills and exceptional customer service awareness
- Ability to use basic IT systems confidently
- A calm, proactive approach to defusing difficult situations
- Physical fitness to meet essential role demands (noting extensive walking as a core requirement)
Working Conditions & Expectations
- Hours: Average of 37 hours per week with rota-based shifts (including regular weekends and bank holidays)
- Pay: 14% weekend enhancement (Saturdays/Sundays only; Crawley allowance excluded)
- Uniform & Training: Fully provided by the council
- Areas Covered: Use of manual UK driving licence (or approved alternatives) for borough-wide travel
- Lone Working: Essential for this role
- DBS Check: Standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance required
- Christmas Closure: Required to work during council shutdown (excluding Christmas Day/Boxing Day; TOIL offered)
Additional Requirements
- Must use a body-worn video camera in accordance with council policies
