Senior or Principal Civil Engineer Tetra Tech, Edinburgh (with Belfast collaboration)
About the Role
Join Tetra Tech as a Senior or Principal Civil Engineer and take a leading role in delivering high-impact, technically complex civil infrastructure projects within a collaborative, forward-thinking environment. Based in Edinburgh, you’ll support the Northern Ireland team while collaborating with colleagues in Belfast and delivering projects across the UK and beyond.
This varied yet strategically impactful role enables growth into leadership, with clear opportunities for progression. You’ll design and deliver civil infrastructure schemes, driving multidisciplinary projects and strengthening regional capabilities.
Purpose & Scope
You will:
- Work closely with teams in Edinburgh and Belfast, spanning Scotland, Northern Ireland, and beyond.
- Lead design and delivery of civil infrastructure schemes, ensuring technical excellence, commercial awareness, and client relationships.
- Envision projects from concept to completion, balancing execution, budget, and compliance.
Your Impact
As a key contributor, your responsibilities include:
- Design and delivery leadership: Balance technical rigor, cost-effectiveness, and client engagement from start to finish.
- Autonomous project management: Oversee budgets, timelines, and resources, aligning projects with profitability while adhering to quality and safety standards.
- Collaboration: Work seamlessly between internal teams and external stakeholders, fostering relationships with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
- Team development: Contribute to business growth and mentor junior engineers (graduates, apprentices, and career juniors) to build a high-calibre team.

Core Responsibilities
Technical Delivery & Design
- Lead civil engineering designs using industry standards, focusing on:
- Drainage
- Infrastructure development
- Site-specific solutions
- Produce high-quality documentation critical to project success.
Project & Commercial Management
- Manage project resources, budgets, and timelines efficiently.
- Contribute to fee proposals and track profitability.
- Ensure financial sustainability while maintaining delivery quality.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build and manage relationships with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies.
- Secure approvals and represent the team professionally and effectively.
Collaboration & Team Development
- Support and integrate across multidisciplinary teams nationwide.
- Mentor next-gen talent, bridging knowledge gaps and growing the organisation’s capability.
Quality, Safety & Professional Excellence
- Champion technical excellence and safety-critical standards.
- Enforce compliance with UK/EU regulations and industry procedures.
Work Environment
- Based in Edinburgh with close links to the Belfast team.
- Hybrid model (2–3 days onsite), flexible to meet project/client demands.
- Travel required across Scotland/Northern Ireland, offering diverse project exposure.
Required Skills, Qualifications & Experience
- Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering (BEng/MEng), with 5–10 years’ industry experience.
- Chartered (or close) status through CIBSE/ICE membership.
- Technical expertise:
- Strong understanding of design standards.
- Proficient in: AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation/Info Drainage/InfoWorks, Microsoft Office Suite.
