Project Civil Engineer – Glasgow or Edinburgh

Engineer the Future of Infrastructure

With a strong confirmed order book and a growing pipeline of multi-disciplinary projects—including highways/roads, major infrastructure works, substations, transmission and distribution reinforcement, and onshore cabling—Tetra Tech is seeking a Project Civil Engineer to join their rapidly expanding team in Glasgow or Edinburgh.

This role offers the chance to work on projects that improve connectivity, strengthen critical infrastructure, and support sustainable development across the UK. Purpose & Scope of the Role

As a Project Civil Engineer, you will lead the production of design packages for concept, tender, detailed, and construction phases across infrastructure projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing civil engineering designs for:
    • Highways/roads
    • Access tracks
    • Bridges
    • Retaining structures
    • Drainage systems
    • Associated works
  • Focusing on buildability, value engineering, and compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Prepare concept designs for planning and third-party consents/approvals.
  • Develop sustainable drainage proposals (SuDS) and liaise with statutory consultees (e.g., Local Authorities, SEPA, Environment Agency).
  • Coordinate with geotechnical, structural, environmental, and planning teams to deliver integrated multi-disciplinary solutions.
  • Act as the client’s point of contact for design packages, ensuring:
    • On-time delivery against project programme.
    • Compliance with budgetary constraints.
  • Apply HSQE (Health, Safety, and Quality, Environment) principles throughout the project lifecycle:
    • Identify hazards and mitigate risks.
    • Communicate residual risks effectively.
  • Contribute to technical excellence while fostering:
    • Proactive collaboration.
    • Effective project management.

1. Technical Expertise in Civil Infrastructure Design

  • Experience in civil engineering design, preferably in highways/roads or major infrastructure projects.
  • Proficiency in:
    • AutoCAD (andCivil 3D),
    • Drainage software (Causeway Flow/MicroDrainage),
    • Hydraulic modelling tools.
  • Knowledge of:
    • DMRB standards,
    • Sustainable drainage (SuDS) design,
    • Earthworks materials,
    • Construction testing and methodologies.

2. Project Delivery & Multi-Disciplinary Coordination

  • Experience managing design packages with multiple disciplinary inputs.
  • Ability to:
    • Plan workloads effectively.
    • Monitor progress against statutory requirements and client specifications.
    • Resolve conflicting priorities while ensuring quality and timeliness.

3. Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to:
    • Engage confidently with clients, contractors, and statutory bodies.
    • Prepare technical reports or celebrate solutions in meetings.
  • Capability to:
    • Build trust and collaboration across teams.
    • Simplify technical details for non-technical stakeholders.

4. Problem Solving & Quality Assurance

  • Analytical thinking to identify and resolve engineering challenges.
  • Attention to detail to ensure outputs meet:
    • Technical accuracy.
    • Regulatory compliance.
  • Experience contributing to quality assurance processes.

5. Team Collaboration & Communication

Mandatory Requirements

  • Education: BSc, BEng, MSc, or MEng degree in Civil Engineering (or a related field).
  • Professional Development: Graduate membership of ICE (or equivalent) is desirable, with support provided for ICE accreditation.
  • Driving: Full UK driving licence (due to mandatory site visits and travel).

Work Patterns & Locations

  • Base location: Glasgow or Edinburgh.
  • On-site requirement: Minimum of 2 days per week.
  • Flexibility: Hybrid working available according to project client needs.
