As our Buildings business continues to grow, we’re looking for a Civil Engineer to join our expanding team based in Birmingham.
Are you a Civil Engineer looking to work on some of the UK’s most exciting and complex building projects? Do you want to be part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team that is shaping sustainable communities and redefining what’s possible in the built environment?
This is an opportunity to develop your career on high-profile projects while being supported by a collaborative culture that encourages innovation, technical excellence, and continuous professional development.
At Stantec, we’re recognised for delivering innovative, sustainable solutions that create lasting value for our clients and the communities they serve. Our Buildings team partners with leading public and private sector organisations to deliver projects across commercial, healthcare, education, residential, life sciences, defence, industrial, advanced manufacturing, aviation, and mixed-use developments.
About The Role
As a Civil Engineer within our Buildings team, you’ll play a key role in the delivery of infrastructure design for a diverse range of building developments across the UK.
Working as part of an integrated multidisciplinary team, you’ll contribute to every stage of project delivery, from initial feasibility and planning through detailed design, construction, and project completion. You’ll have the opportunity to take ownership of your work while collaborating with colleagues across civil, structural, MEP, environmental, and transportation disciplines to deliver coordinated engineering solutions.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Delivering civil engineering designs for a wide variety of building developments.
- Designing highways, access roads, level strategies, external works, and utility infrastructure.
- Preparing surface water and foul water drainage strategies using Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) principles.
- Producing engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and design drawings.
- Using industry-standard software such as Civil 3D, InfoDrainage, Causeway Flow, and AutoCAD to develop innovative engineering solutions.
- Supporting Flood Risk Assessments and drainage strategies where required.
- Liaising with local authorities, statutory undertakers, approval bodies, and external stakeholders throughout project delivery.
- Coordinating designs with structural, MEP, geotechnical, environmental, and planning teams to ensure fully integrated project solutions.
- Applying CDM 2015 principles by identifying, managing, and communicating design risks throughout the project lifecycle.
- Attending client meetings, design reviews, and site visits while building strong relationships with clients and project partners.
- Supporting the successful delivery of projects to programme, budget, and quality expectations.
- Contributing to mentoring and knowledge sharing across the wider Civil Engineering team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
