FJA Recruitment Opportunity for Civil Design Engineer
FJA are recruiting on behalf of a leading specialist within the Water and Wastewater Infrastructure sector for an experienced Civil Design Engineer. This is an excellent opportunity to join a well-established engineering team delivering major capital projects that support resilient water infrastructure and environmental protection across the UK.
The role is based in Brighton.
Responsibilities Of The Civil Design Engineer
The successful candidate will play a key role in the design and development of wastewater network solutions, including pumping systems, pipelines and associated infrastructure. Working closely with project teams and clients, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality engineering solutions that meet technical, environmental and regulatory requirements.
- Deliver civil engineering designs for wastewater network projects, including pumping stations, pipelines and associated infrastructure.
- Prepare and assess design options, ensuring technical, environmental and commercial risks are identified and mitigated.
- Produce design calculations for hydraulic, mechanical and civil engineering elements of wastewater projects.
- Support the development and review of P&IDs, technical specifications and datasheets.
- Conduct engineering appraisals, feasibility studies, site inspections and condition assessments.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure designs comply with client requirements, environmental standards and statutory regulations.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation, including reports, drawings, calculations and specifications.
- Identify and escalate project issues that may impact programme, cost, quality or compliance.
- Ensure all designs are developed in accordance with CDM Regulations, Health & Safety legislation and industry best practice.
- Support the drive towards excellence in Health & Safety and produce safe designs in accordance with CDM Regulations, standards and accepted codes of practice.
- Support project delivery teams to achieve programme milestones and successful project outcomes.
- Promote innovation, continuous improvement and best practice throughout the design process.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, stakeholders and project teams.

Required Skills And Experience Of The Civil Design Engineer
- Minimum of HND or Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering, or able to demonstrate a suitable level of relevant experience within the water, wastewater or utilities sector.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience within the water or wastewater industry.
- Experience designing wastewater network infrastructure, including pumping systems and pipeline solutions.
- Strong understanding of hydraulic design principles and wastewater treatment processes.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting requirements relating to water and wastewater projects.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant engineering design software packages.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and technical decision-making skills.
- Strong attention to detail in design calculations, technical documentation and project deliverables.
- Ability to manage workload effectively and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
- Membership of a professional institution such as ICE or IMechE would be advantageous.
- Working towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (CEng/IEng) or willing to pursue professional registration.
