The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Civil Litigation Solicitor to head our Civil Litigation Department in Manchester. This leadership role is ideal for a solicitor with extensive litigation experience and the ambition to manage and grow a thriving department within a modern, client-focused firm. The successful candidate will be instrumental in delivering legal excellence, driving departmental performance, and contributing to the wider strategic objectives of the firm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Civil Litigation Department, overseeing all operational and strategic aspects of the team.
  • Manage a broad and varied caseload of civil litigation matters, including contractual disputes, property disputes, debt recovery, landlord and tenant issues, and other contentious matters.
  • Provide clear, strategic legal advice to clients, ensuring their interests are protected and objectives achieved.
  • Draft, review and negotiate complex legal documents and correspondence relevant to litigation processes.
  • Represent clients in court proceedings, mediations, and negotiations where appropriate.
  • Supervise and mentor junior solicitors and legal support staff, encouraging professional development and a high standard of work.
  • Monitor case progress and departmental KPIs, ensuring efficiency and compliance with regulatory and firm-wide standards.
  • Remain up to date with changes in civil litigation law and procedure, ensuring continuous development and application of legal knowledge.
  • Contribute to the firm’s business development strategy through networking, client relationship management, and participation in marketing initiatives.
  • Collaborate with senior management to align departmental goals with the firm’s strategic direction.

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified Solicitor in England and Wales with a minimum of 5 years’ PQE, primarily in civil litigation.
  • Demonstrated leadership or managerial experience within a litigation team or department.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and practical experience across a wide range of civil litigation matters.
  • Excellent advocacy, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Strong ability to manage a full caseload independently while overseeing a team.
  • Commercially aware, with a strategic mindset and a commitment to delivering results.
  • Proficient in legal research and familiar with modern case management systems.
  • Exceptional client care, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • A proactive, collaborative approach aligned with the firm’s values of integrity and service excellence.
