General Foreman – Civil Engineering – Leeds
Location: Leeds
Esh Civils, specialising in delivering infrastructure schemes of all sizes—from major capital projects to public realm, highways, flood alleviation, active travel, and bridge works—are seeking an experienced and proactive General Foreman to oversee on-site construction activities across civil engineering projects.
The role is based in Leeds and involves working in partnership with local authorities across North East, Tees Valley, Yorkshire and Humber.
About The Role
This position is critical to ensuring the safe, on-time, on-budget, and high-quality delivery of infrastructure projects. The ideal candidate will lead direct labour teams and contract partners, championing safety, operational efficiency, and defect-free execution.
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Supervision, Safety & Compliance
- Induce and conduct Towards Better Briefings (TBT) effectively
- Lead by example on-site, ensuring strict adherence to HSE standards and legislative requirements (e.g., PUWER, LOLER, Permit to Dig)
- Deliver Risk Assessments (RAMs) and Method Statement briefings to staff
- Comply with and manage daily/weekly permits (e.g., PUWER, LOLER, Permit to Dig)
- Document all HSE reporting/delay notices align with Esh Group procedures

Resource & Team Leadership
- Supervise direct labourers and subcontractors, allocating resources efficiently via gangle championships and Comprehensives (CVRs)
- Chair daily/weekly site meetings, documenting work goals and progress
- Track production/monitoring (daily diary) and resource forecasting with the line manager
- Align resource planning with project cash flow and deadlines
- Co-ordinate equipment hire and off-hire (internal/external for contractors)
Quality & Programme Management
- Ensure 4-score review compliance, QA control inspections (per specification/ITPs)
- Liaise with the Quantity Surveyor, maintaining daily/weekly measurement records
- Co-ordinate sub-contractor programmes, confirming ESH liability attendances and supply chain pipeline
- Innovate operational efficiencies—identify risks, opportunities, and correct defective works in a timely manner
Communication & Stakeholder Relations
- Act as inter-preference liaison between Client, contractors, and Esh Civils teams
- Monthly reporting to management on progress, risks, and development of preventive measures
- Champion customer and stakeholder satisfaction, maintaining indiscriminate collaborative feedback

Essential Criteria
Experience & Qualifications
- Extensive industry experience in highways, drainage, structures, and civil engineering projects
- Expertise in temporary works, deep excavation, and drainage construction specifications
- CSCS Gold Standard mandatory
- SMSTS certification
- Confined Space/Excavation/Streetworks awareness highly preferred
- Qualifications in health/safety (First Aid is a plus)
Licencing & Documents
- Valid UK driving license (EXCEPT “disqualified,” ‘limited’ or ‘learners’ only)
- Points-free or very low-risk situation
Attributes & Skills
- Proactive, can-do attitude—focused on continuity of execution and outcomes
- Excellent business communications (written, verbal, digital)
- Strong ability to adopt/adapt messaging styles for stakeholders/clients
- Cooperative by nature—ahead of the game engaging technical agrément, processes, and improvement innovations
