Civils General Foreman - (Closing date - 31/07/2026)

General Foreman – Civil Engineering Projects (Leeds)

Based within Esh Civils, this role delivers infrastructure schemes of all sizes, including major capital projects in the North East, Tees Valley, Yorkshire, and the Humber. The team partner with local authorities to execute projects such as public realm, highways, flood alleviation, active travel, and bridge works.

Responsibilities are outlined below:


Core Responsibilities

  • Supervision & Leadership

    • Independently and confidently provide inductions, Toolbox Talks (TBT), and Permission to Work (PTW) briefings.
    • Implement and uphold Health & Safety (HSE) standards while leading by example—strict adherence to legislation and quality benchmarks is mandatory.
    • Ensure all construction activities comply with method statements, risk assessments, and Risk Assessments & Method Statements (RAMs) through relevant briefings.
  • Project Oversight & Compliance

    • Uphold daily permits (e.g., PUWER, LOLER, Permit to Dig) and deliver relevant briefings to site teams.
    • Maintain familiarity with Esh Group HSE procedures, ensure proper documentation, and reporting.
    • Verify and log all site personnel training, including task-specific qualifications, on the site register.
    • Garner a 4/4 quality rating on-site (consistent adherence to Very Good/Excellent standards).

  • Technical Expertise & Temporary Works Supervision

    • Hold knowledge of drainage, deep excavations, roads, structures, and temporary works.
    • Act as Temporary Works Supervisor where applicable.
    • Troubleshoot and provoke efficiencies/inventions on site, contributing to collaborative planning, programming, and innovation.
  • Work Planning & Reporting

    • Assist the project planner in managing the master programme, updating as-built records month-to-month.
    • Prepare daily progress tracking, including daily diaries, to support Cost Monitoring & Measurement.
    • Plan and communicate resource needs to line managers, manage equipment hire/dispatch, and ensure efficient resource deployment.
  • Risk Management & Quality Assurance

    • Identify and communicate risks and opportunities in monthly progress reports.
    • Perform site inspections, maintain Quality Assurance (QA) records, and manage Inspection Test Plans (ITP).
    • Coordinate material deliveries and conduct quality checks.
    • Coordinate and enforce timely rectification of defective work, always aligning with reputation for high standards.
  • Stakeholder & Supply Chain Engagement

    • Liaise with clients, suppliers, third parties, and the Construction Liaison Officer as needed.
    • Maintain positive relationships with internal teams, clients, and subcontractors.
    • Uphold sector QA compliance—effective communication is key to suburban success.

Key Qualifications & Experience

  • Proven experience in large-scale civil engineering projects, specifically highways, drainage and structure schemes.
  • Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office and other relevant industry software.
  • Mandatory CSCS Gold Card (minimum).
  • Valid Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certification. (Preferred: Confined Space Training, Streetworks Certification and First Aid at Work license.)
  • Valid UK driving licence (clean or minimal penalty points).
