Senior Engineer (General Civils) – Leeds
Location: Leeds
About the Role
Esh Civils delivers infrastructure schemes of all sizes, including major capital projects, in partnership with local authorities across the North East, Tees Valley, Yorkshire, and the Humber. We specialise in public realm, highways, flood alleviation, active travel, and bridge works.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Engineer to take full responsibility for the day-to-day engineering activities on civil engineering schemes. This role requires technical leadership on site, ensuring projects are delivered accurately, efficiently, and in line with specifications and safety standards. The ideal candidate will coordinate site teams, maintain quality standards, and support the successful delivery of projects.
What We Will Expect From You

Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance
- Understands and implements Safe Methods of Work
- Leads by example in Health, Safety, and Environmental (HS&E) best practices
- Maintains basic site standards with a strong knowledge of construction HS&E

Technical & Leadership Responsibilities
- Demonstrates strong technical expertise in civil engineering principles
- Capable of mentoring junior engineers and setting a professional example
- Provides Troubleshooting & innovation—identifying cost/programme-saving opportunities
- Produce high-quality As-built Surveys and technical drawings
- Competently take off and produce accurate quantities (from tender to completion)
- Can plan and juggle multiple activities while maintaining efficiency

Project & Commercial Management
- Basic understanding of planning software
- Plans work to meet programme milestones and early warning triggers
- Familiar with Contract Requirements (e.g., NEC Clauses 31, 32 & 60)
- Maintains up-to-date records of measurements and quantities for commercial use
- Prepares daily/weekly reports and engineering-based monthly reporting
- Tracks trainee/engineer development against training plans

Quality & Compliance
- Ensures compliance with ISO 9001, 14001, and 18001 standards
- Recognises defective works and ensures suppliers/contractors meet standards
- Compiles HS&E File and handover documentation efficiently

Qualifications & Experience
- Appropriate civils qualification (HNC, HND, or Degree in Civil Engineering)
- CSCS Card (mandatory)
- Experience delivering civil engineering schemes valued at £100k–£5million
- First Aid at Work Certificate (desirable)
- Temporary Works Supervisor certification required
- UK driving licence (clean/lower on points)
Additional Skills & Attributes
- Proficiency in CAD, N4CE/LSS, and other IT tools
- Courteous, professional, and approachable work demeanour
- Open to feedback and eager to take steps for improvement
- Strong problem-solving mindset
- Ability to ** communicate effectively** with teams, clients, and stakeholders
- Decisive under pressure, meeting tight deadlines
