Band 7 – Various hours per week – Fixed-term/Secondment/Permanent contracts available

Location: Emergency Pathway, Medicine & Unscheduled Care (MUSC) – Aberdeen Royal Infirmary


About the Role

An exciting and dynamic opportunity has opened up for an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) or Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) to join the Emergency Pathway within the Medicine & Unscheduled Care (MUSC) service. This rotational post is designed to provide exposure across key clinical areas across Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, including:

  • Flow Navigation Centre (FNC)
  • Acute Medicine (RAAC/Short Stay Medicine/AMIA)
  • Minor Injuries Unit (MIU)
  • Emergency Department (ED)

The rotational model involves 12-hour shifts across a weekly pattern (Monday–Sunday), with both day and night补工作 included. �ẳng member will be expected to operate autonomously, contributing to improvements in patient flow, clinical decision-making, and service innovation in line with NHS Grampian’s clinical strategy.

The role supports continuing professional development, encouraging evidence-based practice aligned with Advanced Practice Best Practice Guidelines. Applicants must demonstrate master’s-level thinking and maintain a robust personal professional portfolio. Dedicated non-clinical time will be assigned to ensure compliance with advance practice requirements and modules.

This post has been developed alongside the growth of ANP/ACP roles within the FNC, allowing practitioners to develop specialist competencies and contribute to the development of new, patient-centred service models.


Key Responsibilities

Working across multiple specialities, the postholder will:

1. Flow Navigation Centre (FNC)

  • Serve as a central triage and referral hub for patients addressed by:
    • Scottish Ambulance Service
    • NHS24
    • Primary Care teams
    • Police Scotland
    • Cancer Treatment Helpline
    • Care Homes
    • Community Pharmacies
  • Utilise near-me video and telephone consultations to facilitate safe, timely patient transitions.
  • Optimise decision-making pathways to ensure patients access appropriate, high-quality clinical support.

2. Acute Medicine Service

  • Provide autonomous, high-level clinical care within:
    • Rapid Access Ambulatory Care (RAAC)
    • Acute Medical Initial Assessment (AMIA)
    • Short Stay Medicine Unit (for undifferentiated and complex consultations)
    • DVT service
  • Evaluate and treat adults presenting with acute, complex or undifferentiated medical conditions.

3. Minor Injuries Unit (MIU)

  • Act autonomously to deliver person-centred emergency clinical services for:
    • Wounds
    • Fractures
    • Strains and sprains
    • Soft tissue injuries
    • Minor burns
    • Simple head injuries
  • Ensure demonstrable, safe diagnostic and management of non-emergency but highly visible presentations.

4. Emergency Department (ED)

  • Offer timely, autonomous clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and proactive management of:
    • Undifferentiated emergencies
    • Traumatic presentations
    • Complex medical conditions
  • Prioritise rapidly, escalate as necessary, and contribute to emergency ward strategy.

5. Service Improvement & Innovation

  • Support the expansion and development of advanced practice within emergency services.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues to streamline patient pathways and referrals.
  • Contribute to continuously refining clinical safety and quality protocols.

Person Specification & Requirements

Essential Criteria

✅ Eligibility to register on the NMC (Nurse or Midwife) or HCPC (ALM) Register for your Parker role ✅ Substantive qualified nurse (Band 6 or above)/ or Advanced Level Midwife practice minimum 2 years in an acute care environment ✅ Current valid registration with relevant professional body and fected supervision/mentorship qualifications ✅ Demonstrated *commitment to developing core practice competencies; ensure personal portfolio is supported by those aligned with NMC/AACP guidelines ✅ Equivalent professional experience as an ANP or ACP in other departments (where applicable) ✅ Ability to relate effectively to customers, carers, families, service teams, volunteers ✅ Registered on the weScan Risk Confidence Management System (knowledge of patient, carers, and family privacy precautions) ✅ Ability to non-indcefully utilise flow information and risk assessment tools ✅ Willingness to participate in core competence review processes

Desirable Criteria

☑ Successful record of advancing acute medicine or emergency pathology ☑ Experience within flow improvement projects (e.g. population profiling and referral dynamics) ☑ Experience integrating **new clinical modalities:/ “multi-level imaging, decision assistance tools) ☑ Familiarity with electronic documentation systems and consultation practices
