**Special Projects Team (SPT) – Claims Assistant
About the Team
The Special Projects Team (SPT) manages all claims deemed "legacy"—defined as any discontinued business approved for transfer. Annually, new discontinued business classifications are reviewed for relocation, considering broker/client expectations, claims location, process expertise, and capacity. Exceptions exist where claims remain with their original divisions.
Purpose & Scope
SPT is responsible for:
- Providing strategy and day-to-day management of MINT’s legacy business under an efficient process.
- Accelerating dormant claim closures.
- Identifying and pursuing commutation opportunities.
As of March 2026, SPT handles over 4,000 claims, covering diverse lines including:
- Marine, Aviation, Motor
- Accident & Health (A&H), Property, Professional Liability
- Medmal, Whole Account, General Reinsurance
- Casualty Reinsurance, Space (claims from 1993 YOA onward)

Key Responsibilities
Core Duties
- Assist in managing SPT’s Reinsurance Casualty portfolio, supporting legacy claims across multiple classes.
- Monitor & report on key watchlist claims by:
- Attending market meetings.
- Liaising with market practitioners and counsel as needed.
- Oversee claims accuracy, ensuring adherence to reserving philosophy and diary protocols to optimise performance.
- Identify and escalate complex losses to senior management with regular updates.
- Conduct cross-team claim assistance (as required) within SPT’s portfolio.
- Champion a customer-focused approach, measurable through:
- Speed of resolution.
- Clear communication with brokers and (re)insureds.
Reporting & External Representation
- Provide weekly/monthly/quarterly reports, highlighting:
- New notifications.
- Claim trends.
- Developments against set targets.
- Act as a representative of Markel, upholding the "Markel Style" and "MINT Claims Philosophy" at:
- Broker/client meetings.
- Market discussions.
- Optionally support claim audits to resolve deficiencies.
- Represent claims team in team broker meetings to enhance customer service.
Performance & Development
- Contribute to the team’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Continuously evaluate and improve workload efficiency.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the claims environment, with London Market and ECF (Electronic Claims File) experience.
- Customer-focused mindset, prioritising communication clarity, speed, and transparency.
- Reinsurance and direct claims handling experience, with strong negotiation skills.
- Professional confidence for internal market interactions and customer-facing engagements.
- Adaptability to diverse claim types and objectives.
- Active independence, proactivity, and strong organisational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication (English).
- Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook proficiency.
