Job Title: Classroom Assistant – Additional Special Educational Needs
Reports To: School Principal, through the class teacher
Job Purpose
Under the direction of the class teacher, outreach teacher, or Education Authority officer, assist with the educational support and care of pupils with special educational needs (SEN) within or outside the classroom.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The precise duties of this role will be determined by the Principal, outreach teacher, or Education Authority officer. The postholder should expect to demonstrate proficiency in at least one of the following core supports:
Additional Specialist Classroom Support (Required)
- Undertake comprehensive or invasive medical/clinical procedures (where applicable).
- Assist pupils with specialist communication needs or sensory difficulties to access the curriculum.
- Work with pupils demonstrating very challenging behaviour (as identified by the Educational Psychology Service).
Special Classroom Support
- Assist teachers in supporting and caring for pupils with SEN, including:
- Facilitating curriculum access.
- Meeting personal needs (e.g., feeding, toileting, dietary requirements).
- Developing an understanding of individual pupil needs.
- Supporting the implementation of authorised programmes (e.g., Education Plans, Care Plans) and encouraging pupil participation.
- Aiding inclusion in mainstream classrooms under teacher guidance.
- Supporting pupils with behavioural management programmes.
- Assisting pupils with transitions (moving around school/transport).

General Classroom Support
- Help pupils learn effectively through:
- Clarifying and explaining instructions.
- Ensuring pupils use equipment/materials safely.
- Motivating and encouraging pupils as required.
- Reinforcing learning areas needing development.
- Promoting pupil independence to enhance progress.
- Keeping pupils on track with assigned work.
- Meeting physical/medical needs while fostering independence.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding issues involving home, pupil, teacher, or school.
- Establish supportive relationships with pupils.
- Prepare, produce, and maintain resources for play sessions and learning activities.
- Supervise groups or individual pupils on structured activities:
- Talking/listening sessions.
- ICT/K-12 learning support.
- Extra-curricular tasks.
- Under teacher direction, assist with off-site activities (with risk assessments).
- Support continuity of adult care (e.g., cloakroom supervision, hygiene routines).
- Support the administration of prescribed medication for sick pupils; manage minor injuries.
- Ensure a safe environment for pupils and report red flags requiring expert attention.

Administration
- Support classroom administration, including:
- Progress tracking (recording pupil development).
- Implementing systems for assessing and evaluating support.
- Providing feedback on pupil progress to teachers.
- Producing written materials (e.g., charts, displays).
- Organising and cataloguing educational resources.
Other Duties
- Attend relevant training programs.
- Assist work placement students with practical tasks.
- Perform additional duties, as directed by the Principal, within the post’s expectations.
