Classroom Assistant – Special Educational Needs

Reports To: The Principal, through the class teacher

About the Role

Under the direction of the class teacher, outreach teacher, or Education Authority, the Classroom Assistant – Special Educational Needs will assist in providing educational support and care for pupils with special educational needs in or outside the classroom.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

(Note: The nature of duties may be adjusted based on direction from the Principal or Education Authority.)

Special Classroom Support
  • Work closely with the teacher to support pupils with special educational needs, ensuring access to the curriculum and meeting personal care requirements (feeding, toileting, etc.).
  • Gain insights into each pupil's specific needs.
  • Support and participate in programs such as Education Plans and Care Plans, actively encourage pupil involvement, and contribute to equality of access in mainstream schools.
  • Handle operational and non-invasive medical/clinical challenges related to pupil disabilities.
  • Implement behavior management programs as directed.
  • Assist with pupil mobility around school and during transport.
  • Support adherence to prescriptions and minor first aid for pupils.
General Classroom Support
  • Ensure pupils can engage effectively in both group and independent learning by:
    • Clarifying instructions and supporting learners with resources.
    • Motivating pupils while reinforcing skills, fostering independence, and maintaining focus on tasks.
  • Maintain knowledge of school policies, adhere to confidentiality protocols, and establish trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Create and maintain relevant learning resources, supervise activities, and prepare/package materials for off-site visits after risk assessment.
  • Administer basic medication and manage minor medical incidents while promoting pupil autonomy.

Administration
  • Assist with classroom record-keeping, progress monitoring, and recording details relating to pupil actions and development.
  • Provide copies of written materials, create charts/displays, and maintain resources used in lessons.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Attend relevant in-service training.
  • Mentor work placement students.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Principal, teacher, or Education Authority within the expected role scope.

1. Essential Criteria

Qualifications & Experience – Option 1 or Option 2

Option 1:

  • Achieve a Level 2 (or equivalent) Certificate/Diploma (not Award Level) in a relevant area from a recognised body AND
  • Gain a minimum of 6 weeks’ experience (formal or placement-based).

Option 2:

  • Secure 12+ months’ experience in a formal learning environment.

Core Knowledge (for interview/assessment):

  • Understanding of health and safety, child development, and safeguarding.

Core Skills:

  • Evidence of planning, adaptability, teamwork, communication, and creativity to support child-centred learning.

Core Behaviours (interview topics):

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships, empathy, and strict confidentiality protocols.

2. Desirable Criteria

(Applied to narrow candidate pools, listed in priority order):

Qualifications & Experience

  • Complete relevant training, e.g. on autism (ASD), ADHD, social-emotional-behavioral difficulties, or language communication.
  • Attain a Level 3 qualification in an appropriate field.
  • Achieve at least Level 2 in English and/or Maths, or higher.

Experience

  • Broaden formal learning experience (e.g. supporting pupils with identified special educational needs).
  • Demonstrate experience in a post-primary educational setting.
  • Comply with digital proficiency for educational and resource purposes.

Availability

Under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007, if shortlisted, you may undergo an Enhanced Criminal Background Check (subject to self-funding charges).
