School Cleaner
Responsible to: Cleaning Supervisor or other authorised person
Job Purpose
Undertake, as part of a team, the cleaning of any area within the premises, designated by the line manager.
1. Duties and Responsibilities

Flooring tasks:
- Sweep, suction clean, mop, dry buff, spray clean, spray wax, machine scrub and dry, strip and re-polish floors using appropriate equipment.
- Clean and remove stains from soft floor surfaces (carpets/matting) using appropriate cleaning methods.

Sanitary and surface cleaning:
- Clean toilet and shower areas, including fixtures and fittings.
- Clean, wash, and dust ledges, walls, fixtures, fittings, and internal surfaces up to 3.35m. Polish furniture where appropriate.
- Empty and clean internal litter bins, removing litter to designated collection points.
2. General Conditions
All duties must comply with:
- The Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978
- Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments and Regulations, and other legal requirements
- COSHH Regulations
- Codes of Practice
Additional conditions:
- Follow standard working conditions applicable to this role.
- Cover sick leave of colleagues following Education Authority procedures.
- Report absences and complete requisite forms signed by the Building Supervisor.
- Wear protective clothing or work wear issued, and flat-soled enclosed-toe footwear whilst cleaning.
- Use and care for cleaning equipment properly, reporting any defects immediately.
- Complete all necessary paperwork.
- Undertake duties within your grade, or accept higher-level duties only with approved training (payment only applies when mandated).

3. Training
- Accept any training for higher-grade duties, provided such requirements exist.
- Accept mandatory training for duties up to and including your current grade, including:
- Induction Training
- Refresher Training

Section 1 – Essential Criteria
Health & Safety Requirements:
- Must be able to undertake any statutory training provided by the Education Authority (EA) cleaning service.
Section 2 – Additional Assessment Criteria
Qualifications & Experiences (Thoroughly assessed at interview):
- Knowledge of:
- Requirements of a School Cleaner
- Cleaning methods and machinery
- Health and Safety, including COSHH, as pertains to this role.
Skills & Abilities (EA’s Game-Changing People Model):**
- Proactive self-management – ability to meet deadlines efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – must read, write, and understand English effectively.
- Strong organisation, planning, and problem-solving capabilities.

- Adaptability – flexible approach, willingness to follow all instructions.

Section 3 – Desirable Criteria
The selection panel will consider these only if needed to reduce the application pool:
Qualifications & Experience:
- 3+ months’ of cleaning experience outside a home environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in using commercial cleaning tools (e.g., buffing machinery).
