Cleaner (School Premises)
Reporting
Responsible to: Cleaning Supervisor or other authorised person.
Job Purpose
Undertake, as part of a team, the cleaning of any area within designated premises.
Duties & Responsibilities
Main Cleaning Tasks
- Sweep, suction clean, mop, dry buff, spray clean, spray wax, machine scrub and dry floors
- Strip and re-polish floors using appropriate equipment
- Clean and remove stains from soft surfaces (carpets, matting) using correct methods
- Clean toilet and shower areas, including fixtures and fittings
- Dust, wash, and clean ledges, walls, furniture, fixtures, and internal surfaces up to 3.35M (polishing where applicable)
- Empty and clean internal litter bins, disposing of waste at designated points

Adhere to strict legal compliance:
- Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978
- COSHH Regulations
- Statutory instruments and codes of practice

Cover colleagues on sick leave per Education Authority procedure
General Conditions
- Wear protective clothing and flat-soled enclosed-toe footwear when on duties
- Use and maintain cleaning equipment safely; report defects immediately
- Complete all necessary paperwork accurately
- Roles may include carrying out tasks of employees up to the same grade level, provided competence is verified

Training Requirements
Employees must complete mandatory training, including:
- Induction & Refresher training
- Any additional training for higher-grade duties (payment only required if mandated by the authority)

A. Statutory Training Responsibility
- Willingness to undergo required training under Health & Safety legislation (provided by the Education Authority).
B. Experience & Knowledge

- Communication: Expectations to be fully competent in English for instructions/interactions

- Scheduling: strong organisation and planning skills
Values (Assessed in interviews)
Evidence to support alignment with the EA's ethos (e.g., commitment to progressive education and equality)
Desirable Criteria (Shortlisted in Specific Circumstances)
- Short-Term & Engineering Experience
- Three months’ cleaning experience in a commercial or outsourced environment
- Familiarity with high-level cleaning tools (e.g., buffing machinery)
Note: Upon school-based appointment, an Enhanced DBS check is mandatory. Cost payments completable separately prior to employment.
