Cleaner – Job Description
Responsible To:
- Cleaning Supervisor or other authorised person
Job Purpose
Undertake, as part of a team, the cleaning of any designated area within the premises.
Duties and Responsibilities
Cleaning Duties:
- Sweep, suction clean, mop, dry buff, spray clean, spray wax, or machine-scrub and dry floors using appropriate equipment;
- Clean and remove stains from soft floor surfaces (e.g., carpets/matting) using appropriate methods;
- Clean toilet and shower areas including fixtures and fittings;
- Clean, wash, dust ledges, walls, fixtures, fittings, and internal surfaces up to 3.35m, polishing furniture where necessary;
- Empty and clean internal litter bins, removing litter to designated collection points.
Compliance & Safety:
- All duties must adhere to:
- The Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978;
- Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments, and Regulations;
- COSHH Regulations and Codes of Practice;
- Work must be completed under normal conditions associated with the role.
Procedures & Reporting:
- Cover sick colleagues in line with Education Authority procedures;
- Report absences and complete relevant paperwork as required;
- Wear protective clothing or issued work wear;
- Wear flat-soled enclosed-toe footwear for cleaning duties;
- Use, maintain, and immediately report any defects in cleaning equipment;
- Complete all necessary paperwork.

Key Legislation & Ethical Responsibilities
The post-holder is expected to:
- Promote good relations and equality, complying with the N.I. Act (1998) Section 75.
- Uphold safeguarding standards under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order 2007;
- An enhanced criminal disclosure check is a mandatory requirement (cost: £33).

- Complete additional training as provided by the Education Authority cleaning service.
Section 2: Essential Criteria (Interview Assessment)
- Qualifications/Experience:
- Demonstrable knowledge of:
- Role requirements as a School Cleaner;
- Cleaning methods/machinery;
- Relevant health & safety, including COSHH.
