Cleaning Operative
Location Vega Building (Gylemuir, Edinburgh)
Positions Available 2:
- 1 x 15h/week
- 1 x 12.5h/week
Hours Full-time equivalent (pro-rata): 36 hours per week Flexible options: Morning, evening, or daytime shifts available Term-time scheduling: Some roles offer sessional hours (school term only)
About the Role
As a Cleaning Operative with the City of Edinburgh Council, you’ll play a key role in our Facilities Management team. Your responsibilities include delivering a high-quality cleaning service across our estate, ensuring all properties remain safe, clean, and welcoming for residents, workers, and learners.

Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- General Maintenance & Cleaning
- Emptying litter and recycling bins
- Cleaning all surfaces, internal glass, floors, furniture, and fittings
- Sanitary Facilities Upkeep
- Ensuring toilets, showers, and washrooms are spotless
- Replenishing consumables (soap, toilet roll, hygiene products)
- Emergency & Specialised Cleaning
- Graffiti removal, spillages (including bodily fluids), and accident cleanup
- Equipment & Logistics
- Maintaining equipment in a clean and functional state
- General Support
- Assisting with cleaning tasks across additional buildings when needed
- Meeting performance standards through consistent adherence to cleaning specifications

Keyholder Responsibilities
- Opening and closing buildings, including:
- Operating security alarm systems
- Securing windows, doors, and utilities (switching off lights, shutting utilities)
- Ensuring premises are left safe, locked, and secure
