Cleaning Supervisor

Cleaning Supervisor

Responsible to: Designated line manager

Responsible for: The supervision of cleaning staff at a specified location

Job Purpose: To provide a cleaning service within a building or building complex to agreed standards.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organise, and control the work of cleaning staff to ensure that EA standards are met, with an expectation that the Cleaning Supervisor will also personally perform cleaning duties
  • Carry out induction, skills training, and refresher training in line with EA practices
  • Liaise with the building manager or other authorised personnel on day-to-day issues related to cleaning
  • Investigate complaints regarding cleaning provisions, implement corrective action, and advise the designated line manager as needed
  • Ensure adequate supplies of materials and light equipment are requisitioned, maintained within budget, and stored correctly
  • Monitor the suitability and performance of materials/equipment, recommending changes to the designated line manager when necessary
  • Recommend and implement procedural changes to improve efficiency, standards, or ease of operation in consultation with the line manager
  • Ensure cleaning standards meet or exceed EA standards within the premises
  • Allocate and oversee the proper return of keys to cleaning staff at the end of each shift
  • Collaborate with service users and report plans to the Area Co-ordinator in advance of school closures
  • Maintain records relating to staff attendance, holidays, absence, and return them to the EA on time
  • Manage records of consumable stocks and inventory of equipment

General Conditions

  • All duties must comply with:
    • The Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978
    • Relevant Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments, Regulations, and Codes of Practice
    • COSHH Regulations
  • Duties are performed in standard working conditions.
  • Must cover colleagues on sick leave per EA procedure.
  • Absence must be reported in line with EA procedures, with forms signed by the Building Supervisor.
  • Protective clothing and flat-soled, enclosed-toe footwear must be worn when carrying out cleaning duties.
  • Issued cleaning equipment must be used and stored safely, with defects reported immediately.
  • All necessary paperwork must be completed accurately.
  • Duties may include responsibilities up to and including the same grade, provided they are within the employee’s competence.

Training

  • Employees must accept training for duties at a higher grade where required, though compensation is provided only if mandated.
  • Employees must also accept training for duties up to and including their own grade, including:
    • Induction training
    • Refresher training

Section 1 – Essential Criteria (Shortlisted via application form)

  • Experience:
    • Demonstrated two years’ experience of cleaning outside the home environment
    • The success candidate may be required to complete necessary health and safety training provided by the EA.

Section 2 – Essential Criteria (Measured at interview stage)

  • Abilities (encompassing EA’s Game Changing People Model):

    • Use of initiative and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
    • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including English language ability
    • Strong organisation and planning skills
    • Ability to work as part of a team
    • Flexibility to instruct others as needed
  • Knowledge:

    • Understanding of the role of a Cleaning Supervisor
    • Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978
    • Familiarity with cleaning methods and machinery
  • Values:

    • Demonstrated alignment with EA’s core values as found here.

  • Experience:
    • Demonstrated supervision skills of staff (may factor into shortlisting).
