Clinical Coder – Clinical Coding Team Leader (Assistant)

The post holder will assist the Clinical Coding Services Lead / Assistant Services Lead in the management of the Clinical Coding Department, ensuring that accuracy, timeliness and completeness of the Trust’s Clinical Coded data is maintained within set guidelines to the highest standard.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Operational Leadership

    • Assist the Clinical Coding Services Lead / Assistant Services Lead in the day-to-day operation and distribution of work within the clinical coding service.
    • Support the development of the service in accordance with local requirements while adhering strictly to national directives.
    • Ensure patient records across both hospital sites are accurately coded to National Standards within required timescales.
  • Promote Clinical Coding and Terminology

    • Assist in promoting clinical terminology and clinical coding throughout the local health community.
    • Work closely with clinicians to enhance coding awareness and best practice.

  • Data Quality and Financial Impact

    • Produce high-quality clinical information in a timely and accurate manner for both internal and external use.
    • Contribute to NHS funding and financial management by ensuring accurate coding compliance, supporting SLAs, clinical governance reporting, and benchmarking.
    • Directly support the Trust’s revenue via the NHS Payment Scheme through precise coding practices.
  • Team Leadership and HR Responsibilities

    • Oversee staffing-related policy adherence, including sickness, holidays, timesheets, timekeeping, appraisals, and 1:1 meetings.
    • Collaborate with other managers, trainers, and auditors within the coding team.
    • Cover roles of senior members of the Clinical Coding Team in their absence.
  • Strategic Awareness

    • Maintain knowledge of key metrics such as HRG’s (Hospital Revenue Groups), HSMR (Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio).
    • Focus on improving coding quality and accuracy to support local health performance.
