About the Opportunity

We are seeking two ST2+ level paediatricians to work across our Paediatric and Neonatal services as part of the middle-tier rota system.
- Post 1: Fixed-term cover for maternity leave (August 2026–February 2027). Earlier start dates may be considered if applicants are available.
- Post 2: 12-month, annual renewable contract. Once again, flexibility for sooner start dates if applicable.

- Band: 1A
- Location: University Hospital Crosshouse, Kilmarnock (a busy District General Hospital, serving Ayrshire and Arran).
- Services involved:
- Neonatal Unit – Collaborates with West of Scotland services for preterm/retrieval babies (passive cooling, perinatal transfers).
- General Paediatrics – Inpatient ward with 24 HDU beds, acute assessment unit, and outpatient services across Ayrshire & Arran.
- Orotund anaesthetic support ensures paediatric emergency cover.

Scope of Duties & Responsibilities
The positioning is for resident doctors at ST2+ level on the middle-tier rota, covering:
- Out-of-hours duties (on-calls, critical emergency responses).
- Day shifts (admissions, inpatient care, ward administration).
- Outpatient clinics and acute assessment unit duties (A&E liaison, general paediatrics).
- Direct support from specialist consultants and Tier 1 doctors (FY2/GPST, Paediatric/Neonatal Nurse Practitioners).
The hospital’s Neonatal Unit delivers 3,000 babies annually and operates within a robust regional network. Collaborative care spans Ayrshire Maternity Unit to central hub facilities under ‘Best Start’.

Requirements
Successful candidates must:
- Hold Full GMC Registration with an active Licence to Practice.
- Have significant ST2/3 paediatric experience.
- Be willing to undertake on-call responsibilities.
About NHS Ayrshire & Arran
Serve a population of ~367,000 at 625-bed University Hospital Crosshouse, delivering a wide range of paediatric and neonatal care. The unit supports:
- Prefabricated transfers (adult/neonatal, cross-regional).
- Acute/HDU paediatric consultation, within a multidisciplinary setting.
- Engages with Ayrshire Maternal Unit network and related specialities.
