About the Role

The Clinical Education Coordinator is a full-time, on-site position in the United Kingdom. The role is central to coordinating clinical placements and learning experiences for learners, ensuring alignment with professional and regulatory standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Scheduling and monitoring clinical placements
  • Maintaining accurate records of placements and compliance
  • Supporting learner orientations, induction, and coaching on placement requirements
  • Collaborating with internal academic staff, external partners (e.g., NHS Placement Coordinators, ATL Healthcare), and SLT managers
  • Evaluating and reporting clinical education outcomes
  • Leading the design and delivery of clinical aspects of the BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy programme
  • Coordination of clinical education and placements across the programme
  • Ensuring provision of practice-based learning opportunities in line with HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) and RCSLT (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists) guidelines
  • Managing risks associated with student placement, clinic operations, and patient safety

This role profile is indicative, not prescriptive, with duties shaped by the contract of employment. The postholder will oversee:

Clinical Education Leadership

  • Partner with Speech and Language Therapy Heads of Service and placement coordinators to guarantee high-quality, sustainable placements.
  • Develop and maintain systems for placement sourcing, allocation, approval, and monitoring.
  • Ensure alignment with programme-specific standards (including HCPC standards of proficiency and RCSLT practice education guidelines).

Student and Educator Support

  • Lead coordination of learner support during placements.
  • Co-ordinate practice educator training for SLT clinical placements.
  • Collaborate with university student services and the well-being team to implement reasonable adjustments in SLT placements.
  • Enhance and disseminate feedback on student evaluations of clinical education and practice placements.
  • Collectively develop placement audit procedures, per HCPC guidelines, as part of the university’s Placement Audit team.

Clinical and Teaching Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist teaching for clinical education modules and speech & language pathology subjects.
  • Operationalise and advance clinical knowledge and skills for students on placements.
  • Oversee the on-site clinic for individuals with communication difficulties.

Professional and Academic Development

  • Design, develop, and deliver teaching programmes (including new courses).
  • Regularly review and update course content and materials to align with quality standards.
  • Utilise interactive, student-focused teaching methods that foster engagement and enthusiasm.

Research & Scholarly Activities

  • Engage in pedagogic research and scholarly analysis.
  • Contribute to the evolution of teaching and learning strategies.

Communication

  • Simplify complex ideas for varied audiences (including staff, students, and external partners).
  • Participate in committee work at University and School levels.

Liaison & Networking

  • Establish and develop internal and external networks (e.g., professional associations, external examiners, employers).
  • Foster relationships with educational bodies, employers, and professional organisations.

Management & Mentorship

  • Provide academic leadership to team members (aligning with department guidance).
  • Mentor peers and colleagues.
  • Resolve quality and course-delivery obstacles, escalating as needed.

Teamwork & Pastoral Care

  • Collaborate to lead and harmonise teams.
  • Address referrals and issues related to student progress and well-being.

Initiative & Problem-Solving

  • Monitor student progress and retention, ensuring parity and balancing student cohorts.
  • Identify strategic opportunities for course development/expansion.
  • Manage resources, timelines, and operational aspects of programme delivery.

Planning & Risk Mitigation

  • Adhere to the University’s H&S Policy, including conducting risk assessments for physical/clinical environments.
  • Advance compliance with HCPC guidelines, university quality standards, and regulatory protocols.

  • Expertise: Deep understanding of Speech & Language Therapy clinical education for innovation in the field.
  • Work Environment Demands: Balancing teaching, administration, and competing deadlines with sensitivity to scheduling demands. Physical and emotional needs for roles involving the clinical environment are upheld through risk assessments and hazard reduction.
