Clinical Educator and Paediatric Development Nurse
Clinical Educator and Paediatric Development Nurse (Internal Role for RUH Employees)
About the Role
The Clinical Educator and Paediatric Development Nurse provides clinical leadership, education, and support to ensure safe, effective, and evidence-based care of children within the Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU). As the paediatric link nurse, you will:
- Support workforce capability through structured education and simulation.
- Ensure compliance with GPICS v3 and national paediatric standards.
- Collaborate with ICU multidisciplinary teams (MDT), paediatrics, emergency departments (ED), and retrieval services.
- Maintain a strong clinical presence in ICU.
This role also involves participating in adult ICU education, supporting CC3N Step competencies, and delivering in-house workshops/courses.
Main Duties
Paediatric Development Nurse Role
- Lead paediatric readiness within ICU.
- Ensure staff competence in:
- Paediatric assessment
- Stabilisation
- Delivery of paediatric care
- Deliver paediatric simulation and emergency training.
- Liaise with paediatrics, EDs, and retrieval teams.
- Attend relevant meetings to ensure collaborative compliance with guidelines.
- Implement national guidance and safety alerts.
Education and Workforce Development
- Develop education programmes aligned with GPICS v3 and National Paediatric Guidelines.
- Partner with higher education institutions to support staff through formal courses (clinical and theoretical components).
- Assist with induction, preceptorship, and competency frameworks.
- Promote a learning culture within ICU.
- Ensure staff competence in equipment and clinical skills.

- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
- Maintain high standards of documentation and communication.

Clinical Responsibilities
- Deliver expert clinical care in the ICU environment.
- Support paediatric stabilisation and transfers.
- Advocate for patients and families.
- Promote safeguarding and family-centred care.
Leadership and Management
- Provide clinical leadership within the MDT.
- Support staff performance and development.
- Contribute to recruitment and retention.
Governance, Audit, and Quality
- Participate in audit and quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with policies and standards.
- Utilise incident reporting to enhance safety.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
Essential:
- Registered Nurse with NMC registration (Part 1).
- Postgraduate Adult Critical Care Nursing qualification.
- Completed Practice Educator and Assessor Course.
- Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PILS) certified.
- Paediatric Critical Care Level 3 qualification.
Experience
Essential:
- Minimum 3 years of Adult ICU experience.
- Experience in the care of the critically ill child in an Adult ICU setting.
Desirable:
- Experience in the care of the critically ill child in a Paediatric ICU.
- Simulation training or experience.
- Previous teaching or practice educator roles.

- DBS Check: This role is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions).
