Clinical Fellow in Trauma & Orthopaedics – Junior Middle Grade Resident Rota
Applications are invited for a 12-month Clinical Fellow post in Trauma & Orthopaedics within NHS Lanarkshire. The post is available from 5 August 2026 and is suitable for applicants at ST1/2 level (or equivalent) or above who are pursuing a career in Trauma & Orthopaedics.
This is a training-focused fellowship providing excellent exposure to both trauma and elective orthopaedics within one of Scotland's busiest Trauma & Orthopaedic departments. The successful candidate will gain extensive operative, outpatient and acute trauma experience while working within a supportive department with an established reputation for high-quality education, supervision and career development.
The successful applicant will participate in the junior middle-grade resident rota, including daytime duties, resident overnight on-call and weekend working. During on-call shifts, the post holder will assess and manage acute trauma referrals from the three Emergency Departments across Lanarkshire, together with urgent GP referrals, supported by senior resident colleagues and consultant supervision.

The post provides regular opportunities to attend trauma theatres, fracture clinics, elective orthopaedic clinics and elective operating lists under direct consultant supervision. Fellows are encouraged to develop their operative skills, build operative logbook numbers, undertake workplace-based assessments and gain experience across a broad range of orthopaedic subspecialties.
The department actively supports participation in audit, quality improvement, research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and leadership activities. Fellows are allocated an Educational Supervisor and encouraged to maintain an ISCP portfolio with regular workplace-based assessments and educational meetings, providing an experience closely aligned to Specialty Training.
This fellowship would be particularly suitable for doctors preparing to apply for Trauma & Orthopaedic Specialty Training (ST3) in 2027 who wish to strengthen their operative experience, develop a competitive portfolio and train within a friendly, high-volume department committed to delivering excellent patient care and high-quality surgical education.
