Clinical Lead
Clinical Lead
You will join a varied team of clinicians from different professions, working on products and services across NHS England’s Transformation Directorate.
In this role, you will play a key role in shaping the safe delivery of national programmes, ensuring clear benefits for citizens and patients, and supporting clinicians to provide better care.
The Role
- Provide the framework and direction for our Clinical Informaticians, working across programmes involved in large-scale change
- Act as a key clinical voice within programme teams across the Transformation Directorate
- Provide clinical oversight for internal safety and assurance activities
- Deputise for the Senior Clinical Lead across various functions
You will regularly engage with internal and external stakeholders, often addressing sensitive, complex, and contentious issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support clinicians across the organisation, ensuring programmes and services have access to appropriate clinical input
- Represent clinical perspectives in externally facing Programme Boards, Clinical Reference Panels, or Clinical Advisory Groups
- Play a critical role in ensuring safe and effective implementation of digital and clinical transformation projects

Requirements
Candidates must be:
- Registered and regulated health or care professionals
- High-level specialists with expertise in clinical informatics
- Trained Clinical Safety Officers (CSOs)
Contract & Pay
Appointments will be made on:
- 37.5 hours/week (non-medical, band 8c) or eligibility for band 7-8d for doctors/dentists based on experience
- Noting BSU/H for full-time senior/specialists
- With 10 programmed activities/week (40 hours weekly) for relevant professionals
Support & Onboarding
Current NHS colleagues will undergo an Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) to transfer key data such as competency status, Continuous Service Dates (CSD), and annual leave. Opt-outs are available.

Contract-based staff are expected to spend at least 40% of work time in NHS England offices.
New recruits from outside the NHS will typically start at the bottom of the pay band.
