The Role

As part of the Mental Health Senior Leadership Team, the Principal Clinical Lead is responsible for:

  • Clinically leading regional services within the NHS Talking Therapies Business Unit
  • Conducting strategic clinical service planning for multiple services
  • Providing clinical oversight and accountability
  • Demonstrating strong team leadership
  • Building strong relationships with regional operational counterparts
  • Collaborating closely with other departments to help achieve VHG’s objectives

This role is critical in driving strong clinical outcomes and ensuring accountability for meeting clinical KPIs in regional services. You’ll focus on:

Responsibilities

A summary of the core tasks under your governance:

  • Strategic Clinical Leadership: Shape and oversee regional clinical services.
  • Team & Stakeholder Observation: Ensure strong working relationships with other NHS and operational teams.
  • Quality Assurance & Improvement: Maintain and improve clinical standards through ongoing analysis and development.
  • Collaborative Partnerships: Engage across NHS Talking Therapies and broader healthcare teams to represent your region’s clinical needs.
  • Goals Alignment: Direct efforts to support NHS-wide organisation objectives, especially those relevant to mental health strategy and resilience.

Requirements & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Qualified Mental Health Professional, such as:

    • Clinical psychologist
    • Counselling psychologist
    • Mental health nurse
    • Social worker
    • Occupational therapist
    • CBT therapist
  • Registered with the appropriate professional regulatory body:

    • NMC
    • HCPC
    • BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies)
  • BABCP accreditation or equivalent for a minimum of four years.

Other Information

  • Remote working: Primary responsibility is remote-based, with an expectation to travel at least once a month to either London or Manchester.
  • Travel commits: Quarterly to Bristol and annually to Essex (East Queensland cities).
