# Clinical Matron – Inpatient Maternity Services (Women & Children’s Division)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate, and forward-thinking Clinical Matron to lead and enhance high-quality care across our Inpatient Maternity Services within the Women & Children’s Division.

This role spans:

  • Inpatient antenatal ward
  • Women’s Triage service
  • Scheduled care
  • Inpatient postnatal ward

As this pivotal leadership position, you will:

  • Champion family-centred care
  • Uphold the highest standards of safety and quality
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and professional development

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical, professional, and midwifery leadership to multiple inpatient wards, teams, and services.
  • Be visible, authoritative, and approachable to patients, families, and staff, offering guidance, advocacy, and support.
  • Ensure compulsions of the ‘Ten Key Matron Responsibilities’ (nationally recognised framework).
  • Drive joined-up care, ensuring services reflect the diverse needs of Bristol’s population and involve women, birthing people, and their families in the planning and delivery of care.
  • Work closely with other Clinical Matrons, Divisional Directors of Midwifery and Nursing, and team members to foster safe and equitable care.
  • Represent the Women & Children’s Division and women’s healthcare services (both internally and externally) and deputise for the Deputy Divisional Director of Midwifery and Nursing when requested.
  • Maintain clinical presence by working in practice for part of the role.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential Criteria:

  • Current NMC registrations (essential)
  • Master’s level education achieved or a commitment to attaining it (willingness recognised).

Desirable Criteria:

  • Midwifery or Nursing postgraduate qualification at Master’s level

Application & Interview Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • Broad knowledge of maternity services – understanding current practices and challenges.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of New Policies and Best Practice in Midwifery.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching, facilitating, and presenting to peers and colleagues.
  • Experience in leading teams, including managing organizational/process changes and performance management.
  • Advanced communication skills, including mediation, negotiation, advocacy, and supporting behavioural change.
  • Initiative, flexibility, and adaptability to meet the evolving needs of maternity services.
  • Capability to cope with extreme emotional situations and support staff/persons affected.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Knowledge of Acute General Hospital systems (integrated clinical service delivery).
  • Experience in undertaking research and audit projects to improve practice.
  • Ability to integrate midwifery/nursing guidance and adopt evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Experience preparing and delivering effective, high-level presentations (engaging diverse stakeholders).
