Biologics Clinical Nurse Specialist
About the Role
Support the delivery of specialist biologics services across DMC Dermatology.
The Biologics Clinical Nurse Specialist (Buerns Specialist) will:
- Assess, screen, initiate and monitor patients receiving biologic and advanced systemic therapies for dermatological conditions.
- Ensure safe, effective and evidence-based biologics practice, maintaining accurate documentation, including pre-treatment screening and ongoing monitoring.
- Collaborate with the dermatology multidisciplinary team to deliver high-standard patient care.
- Provide patient education and self-injection training, monitor treatment responses, pharmacovigilance and adverse event reporting, and contribute to governance activity.
- Support the development of biologics standards within the service.
Role Summary
- Provide specialist assessment, screening, initiation and ongoing monitoring of patients on biologic and advanced systemic therapies.
- Ensure patient safety, accurate monitoring and compliance with NICE technology appraisals and clinical protocols.
- Educate patients on treatment risks, benefits, infection risk and self-administration techniques.
- Monitor treatment responses using validated outcome measures and escalate concerns as required.
- Work collaboratively with dermatologists, nurses, pharmacists, homecare providers and administrative staff to support the safe delivery of biologics services.
Key Objectives & Goals
- Deliver safe and effective biologic therapy initiation and monitoring in compliance with NICE guidance.
- Assess and screen patients to evaluate suitability for biologic therapy, considering diagnosis, disease severity and clinical risk factors.
- Monitor patient progress, manage adverse reactions and ensure accurate clinical records (screening, monitoring, registry submissions).
- Provide patient education on treatment, self-injection techniques, infection risk and aftercare.
- Contribute to service improvement, governance, audits and pharmacovigilance.
- Maintain clear communication and continuity of care across the dermatology MDT, pharmacy and homecare providers.
- Participate in governance, QI initiatives and audit processes.

Reporting Line & Team Structure
- Reports to the Dermatology Service Manager or Dermatology Lead Nurse.
- Works closely with dermatologists, dermatology nurses, pharmacists, homecare providers and administrative staff.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Patient Care & Treatment Monitoring
- Conduct assessment, screening, initiation and ongoing monitoring of patients following clinical protocols and NICE guidance.
- Undertake and interpret pre-treatment screening (bloods, TB, hepatitis and infection screening) and arrange ongoing monitoring.
- Monitor patient responses (using validated outcome measures), managing or escalating adverse reactions and infections.
- Accurately record screening results, monitoring data and clinical outcomes (including registry submissions).
Patient Education & Training
- Educate patients on biologic therapy, self-injection techniques, infection risk, aftercare and skin care advice.
Collaborative & Governance Roles
- Coordinate care pathways with dermatology team, pharmacy and homecare providers to ensure timely treatment access.
- Participate in governance, audits, service improvement and pharmacovigilance.
- Maintain a safe, compliant clinical environment and uphold infection prevention standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Essential
- NMC-registered nurse.
- Experience (or willingness to undertake) biologics training (accredited standard).
- Knowledge of dermatological conditions (e.g., psoriasis, atopic eczema, hidradenitis suppurativa).
- Ability to assess, screen and monitor biologics safely per established protocols.
- Strong communication skills for patient education and self-injection training.
- Accuracy in clinical record-keeping (screening, monitoring, adverse event documentation).
- Awareness of infection prevention, patient safety and immunosuppression risks.
- Commitment to evidence-based dermatology care.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Organisational and time management skills for caseload management.
- Participation in governance, audits and leadership initiatives.

Desirable
- Previous experience in biologics initiation/monitoring or advanced systemic therapies.
- Patient education or counselling experience (chronic skin conditions).
- Familiarity with dermatology governance, audits and QI processes.
- Experience in mentoring junior staff or biologics service development.
- Clean UK driving licence (required for multi-site role).
Experience & Qualifications
- Experience in dermatology, outpatient or procedural nursing.
- Biologics training, structured initiation/monitoring experience, or direct support to such services.
- Detailed treatment record-keeping and governance/audit participation.
- Experience with complex or chronic skin conditions (advantageous).
- Experience across primary/community & secondary care (desirable).

Travel Requirements
- Multi-site role across North Lincolnshire – own transport required.
