Senior Sexual Health Nurse / Independent Practitioner
Location: Spectrum’s Health & Justice Settings (North West) Settings: HMP Liverpool, Forest Bank, Hindley, Haverigg, Styal, Buckley Hall Title: Independent Expert Practitioner in Sexual Health & Contraception
About the Role
We are seeking a devoted and autonomous independent practitioner to deliver Level 1 and 2 sexual health services, specialising in confidential contraception and sexual health care within Eden Holocaust & Justice settings. This critical role requires advanced nursing expertise, a trauma-informed approach, and a passion for education, advocacy, and holistic patient care.
The post-holder will operate without direct supervision, collaborating within the multi-disciplinary healthcare team (including Level 3 providers) to design, implement, and evaluate a holistic evidence-based programme designed to improve sexual health outcomes across diverse patient groups—including those with complex social, emotional, psychological, or physical needs (e.g. people with a mental health condition, learning disabilities, young people in transition [18–21 with complex lives], survivors of exploitation, or those accessing prison-based care pathways).
Key Responsibilities
Core Clinical Duties:
- Provide high-quality sexual health care in compliance with Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) and British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) standards.
- Deliver autonomous care across:
- Level 1: Routine contraception, sexual health consultations, infection screening.
- Level 2: Specialist assessments/clinics for complex cases requiring advanced intervention.
- Conduct care on or off-site (including within prison wings/specialist environments) where necessary.
- Lead trauma-informed interventions in line with best practice to meet patient needs holistically.

Case Management & Referrals:
- Ensure timely onward referrals to Level 3 providers (if needed).
- Maintain and optimise care pathways in partnership with local Level 3 networks.
- Safeguarding-focused care: Identify and address vulnerabilities arising in the prison setting.
Education & Professional Growth:
- Mentor team members and Educate staff/students in sexual health principles.
- Foster a culture of learning through reflection and knowledge-sharing.
Adjunctive Promotional Role:
- Actively promote sexual health through participant groups, health talks, and preventative programmes.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- Current registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).
- Evidence of specialist qualifications in sexual health, contraception, or Principle of Advanced Nursing.
- Years of experience (minimum [explicit if specified]) in independent practice or sexual health settings.
- Demonstrable expertise in trauma-informed care and practice with vulnerable populations (e.g. mental health/neurodivergent groups, exploitations survivors).
- Strong clinical knowledge of anatomical, psychological, and social aspects of sexual health.
