An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Oncologist to join a progressive oncology service in the West Midlands.

The successful candidate will contribute to specialist cancer care within Breast, Lung, or Head & Neck tumour sites, working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality, patient-centred treatment. The role also offers opportunities in service development, acute oncology, clinical research, education and quality improvement, while supporting the continued expansion of modern oncology services.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide a comprehensive Clinical Oncology service across Breast, Lung or Head & Neck cancer pathways in collaboration with consultant colleagues as a core responsibility.
  • Provide specialist assessment, treatment planning and ongoing management for patients receiving radiotherapy and systemic anti-cancer therapies.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including surgeons, physicians, radiologists, pathologists, specialist nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals to optimise patient care.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, treatment planning and clinical decision-making.
  • Support the Acute Oncology Service as required, including participation in the consultant out-of-hours on-call rota.
  • Provide consultant cover during periods of annual leave and periods of high service demand.
  • Supervise, support and provide educational leadership to junior doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in outpatient clinics and ward reviews, and follow patients throughout their cancer treatment pathway.
  • Contribute to radiotherapy planning, peer review and delivery of evidence-based oncology treatments.
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement initiatives and annual appraisal processes.
  • Support and participate in clinical research and clinical trials to improve cancer outcomes.
  • Contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education through teaching and training activities.
  • Work collaboratively with operational managers and clinical colleagues to support service development, pathway redesign and continuous improvement, as part of the role's broader responsibilities.
  • Maintain high standards of clinical documentation, patient safety and compliance with national oncology guidelines.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Registration Essential

  • MBBS, MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP or equivalent higher medical qualification.
  • FRCR (Clinical Oncology) or equivalent specialist qualification.
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Clinical Oncology (or within six months of CCT at interview or CESR equivalent).

Desirable

  • Higher postgraduate qualification (MSc, MD or PhD) in Oncology or a related speciality.
  • Evidence of additional postgraduate study relevant to cancer care.

Experience Essential

  • Extensive experience in Clinical Oncology with expertise in Breast, Lung or Head & Neck malignancies.
  • Experience delivering radiotherapy and systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT).
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary cancer teams.
  • Experience managing acute oncology presentations and complex cancer patients.
  • Experience supervising junior doctors and supporting multidisciplinary staff.
  • Experience participating in clinical audit, governance and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participation in clinical research or oncology clinical trials.
  • Minimum 1 year of NHS experience.

  • Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making skills in Clinical Oncology.

  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and multi-professional teams.
  • Excellent organisational and workload management skills.
  • Commitment to delivering safe, evidence-based and patient-centred cancer care.
  • Strong leadership and service development capabilities.

Teaching, Audit & Research Essential

  • Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
  • Experience teaching, supervising and mentoring junior medical staff.
  • Participation in clinical audit, quality improvement and clinical governance activities.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Evidence of engagement with current oncology research and evidence-based practice.

Desirable

  • Publications, presentations or involvement in national or international oncology research.
  • Experience as a principal or sub-investigator in clinical trials.
