Clinical Pharmacist
Foundation Pharmacist – Clinical Pharmacist Role
Northumbria supports our clinical pharmacists in their professional development through a foundation programme of education and training. This includes structured rotations, educational opportunities, and a foundation pharmacist framework.
Our progressive team has a national reputation for innovation and development, featuring one of the highest proportions of pharmacist prescribers in the country. Pharmacists here play key roles across general wards, specialist clinics, GP practices, homes, and care settings.
About the Role
This is a rotational role, with the expectation to work across all trust sites. Commitments include:
- Weekend working
- On-call duties for clinical teams
- Support for 7-day clinical pharmacy services, particularly at our Specialist Emergency Care Hospital
We operate a flexible approach and welcome applications from:
- Individuals seeking part-time or job-share opportunities
- Trainee pharmacists (qualifying August 2026)
- Recently qualified pharmacists
A band 6 clinical pharmacist flexible working plan is available trustwide, to be discussed at interview. Roles are available on both permanent and fixed-term bases.

Key Responsibilities
You would be expected to:
- Provide skilled professional and clinical support as part of a pharmacy team delivering clinical pharmacy services, including medication prescribing post-qualification.
- Contribute to continuously improving medicines use through participation in:
- Clinical governance initiatives
- Risk management activities
- Clinical audits and practice developments
- Commit to completing continuous professional development (CPD), aligned with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Foundation Pharmacist Pathway, and completing required post-qualification training.
Our reflection measures mobile and stationary sites, including:
- Three major locality hospitals:
- North Tyneside General Hospital
- Wansbeck General Hospital
- Hexham General Hospital
- Community hospitals and clinics (along the coastline from Tynemouth to Berwick-on-Tweed)
- Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (first-of-its-kind in England)
- Primary/ community care settings
- People’s homes to support independent living

Typical Work Locations
Predominantly:
- Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital
- North Tyneside General Hospital
- Wansbeck General Hospital
- Hexham General Hospital
Occasionally, roles may also extend to:
- GP practices
- Care homes
- Patients’ homes
Working Patterns & Hours
Current core hours:
- Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital: 08:15–16:45 (subject to possible future adaptations based on service needs)
- Other sites: 08:30–17:00
Additional commitments:
- Rotational on-call and weekend cover allocated as required.
