Clinical Psychologist – Paediatric and Neonatal Services

Job Overview

This opportunity provides an exciting chance to deliver a qualified specialist clinical psychology service to patients in Paediatric and Neonatal Services at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust. Your role will span all care sectors, including:

  • Providing specialist psychological assessment and therapy for children, young people and their families
  • Advising non-psychologist colleagues and other carers
  • Working autonomously within professional guidelines and team policies
  • Contributing to service development, audit, and research

While previous paediatric psychology experience is desirable, it is not mandatory as you’ll receive support from a supervising Consultant Clinical Psychologist and be part of a developing paediatric psychology team.

This crosses diverse groups including:

  • paediatric psychology (0.7 WTE)
  • paediatric oncology, plastics, and neonates (0.3 WTE, both inpatients and outpatients)
  • South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) Base Specialties (0.1 WTE)

Paediatric psychology is enhanced through:

  • Monthly meetings (business, journal, research presentations, clinical & skill sharing)
  • Quarterly paediatric diabetes specialist interest group meetings within CNWL

Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Provide psychological assessments across multiple data sources (tests, measures, observations, structured interviews)
  • Develop and implement treatment plans using evidenced psychological interventions for:
    • Individual clients, families, and groups
    • Clients with varying care needs, from universal to specialist care
  • Evaluate treatments, balancing theoretical models with complex historical/developmental factors
  • Operate with autonomous professional responsibility for client assessment/treatment/discharge
  • Deliver specialist psychological advice to multidisciplinary teams

Support & Coordination

  • Serve as a care coordinator, managing psychological care plans and collaborating with family members and referring agents
  • Represent psychological aspects of risk assessment and management and provide guidance to other professionals
  • Offer MDT support including:
    • Reflective practice sessions
    • Consultations
    • Debriefs/supportive sessions

Wider Service Impact

  • Liaise with external agencies and multidisciplinary teams

  • Central and North West London NHS Trust (CNWL) oversees AMHS services across Brent, Hillingdon, Harrow, Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, and Milton Keynes, as well as speciality services for other trusts.
  • Provides Paediatric Psychology Services across 7 acute hospitals in Central and North West London.
  • Chelsea & Westminster Hospital is a large teaching hospital serving ethnically and socioeconomically diverse populations.

  • Paediatric inpatient units (including neonates)

Detailed Job Specifics

Assessment & Intervention

To carry out, for each supported child, young person and family:

  • Appropriate psychological assessments integrating evidence from:

    • Tests (e.g., neuropsychological measures)
    • Self-report scales
    • Ratings (behavioural or psychiatric observations)
    • Semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders
  • Conceive and implement treatment plans based on:

    • Evidence-based modelling
    • Efficacy of interventions across care settings
  • Delegate roles ensuring integration of preceding data while elaborating psychological formulations through heterogeneous approaches

  • Adaptively adjust revised hypotheses drawing from various therapy and thought-school lenses (CBT, Psychodynamic, Lifespan etc.)

Clinical Liability & Governance

  • Release abstracted clinical insights regarding
  • Assess psychological interventions transparently as part of multidisciplinary care
  • Discharge plans collaboratively with all parties, clarifying expectations and monitoring outcomes

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Accredited Doctoral-level Clinical Psychology training (BPS), covering:
    • Models of psychopathology
    • Clinical psychometrics & neuropsychology
    • At least two distinct therapeutic models
    • Lifespan developmental psychology
  • Registration as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Desirable:

  • Additional training/qualifications in:
    • Relevant applied psychology
    • Advanced research methodologies

Experience

Essential:

  • Broad experience with specialist psychological assessment using multi-source data (child, YP, family cohorts).
  • Familiarity with:
    • Theoretical foundations of children’s social-emotional development
    • Legal-f<\ühren microbiota complexities of inter-cultural service delivery

Desirable:

  • Pre-qualified/post-qualified experience in paediatric psychology settings (formal/exploratory).
  • Exposure to working with diverse cultural contexts.
  • Experience in teaching, training, or supervision within child/adolescent focus areas.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential Requirements:

  • Highly developed skills:

    • Using complex psychological assessment techniques requiring sustained focus.
    • Communicating highly technical or emotionally sensitive information effectively (written/oral) for:
      • Clients, families, carers, internal/external professionals
  • Application of culturally responsive models to accommodate varied client needs

Desirable:

  • Expertise in highly complex:
    • Multidisciplinary acute health care settings
    • Reflective practice/critical supervision frameworks
